ToggleZoom kills framerate

I don't quite understand why this is. If I am running in any mission (stock gg ones or even an empty new mission) pressing the 'e' key to turn on the zoom will significantly impact the framerate. It's really bad when you move around - especially when panning. For example, in normal view, I'm averaging around 160 fps on an empty mission when panning around fairly rapidly. If I hold 'e' to turn on zooming, there's an initial drop to about 29fps, then it jumps back up to nearly 160 fps if I don't move at all. If I then pan around, the framerate drops. If I'm panning as quickly in zoom mode as I do in normal mode, the framerate drops to 5 fps!

From what I can see, the zoom function is reducing the FOV. My logic says this should make it easier to render not harder. Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks,

Ben

I'm using TGE 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Intel)

Hello Ben,
I just tried this using the standard TGE 1.5 Stronghold mission. Viewing as you said fast panning and zoomed etc. But I wasn't able to reproduce this results on my system. My FPS went up as understandably.

What is your video card out of interest?

So will have to see some results of other Win/Mac users?

Hi Edward,

Thanks for your report. Definitely interesting.

I'm on a 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo 17" MacBook Pro with an ATI X1600 (256MB VRAM) and 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Take care,

Ben
