Atlas making it into TXE?

by Ryan Rogers · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 11/25/2006 (3:47 pm) · 5 replies

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this or not, but here it is anyway (since I don't see a TorqueX Public Forum yet).

It has been said that parts of TSE will make it into TorqueX. Will the Atlas terrain make it? I know it's not going to for 1.0, but are there any plans for a future release? I am hoping that the recent refactoring of the code for Atlas2 had portability as one of the goals. ;-)

If there are no plans to do this, please let me know as that will affect the selection of engine to be used for my upcoming project.

If this is planned, can we get a very rough ETA (heh), or else at least it's priority vs. other announced features?

For example, which of the following are we likely to see first, if not at the same time:

- terrain editor for Atlas
- Atlas for TorqueX

Either way, I assume any editor to be built will also support TXE, similar to the TGB editors?

If there are no plans to move Atlas to TorqueX, that information will help me greatly.

Thanks,
Ryan

I asked this question a long time ago and got no responses. I hope they put atlas into TorqueX.

The initial release of TorqueX is focused on providing TGB like functionality (although it can do much more).

Thanks Tom, yep that's why I said "I know it's not going to for 1.0"; what I'm curious about is the next few releases after that?

I don't need Atlas for TXE right now, but what I do need to know whether or not it is definately planned on coming at some point. Any details would be appreciated, even if it's as simple as "Yes, it will someday be in there, but we don't know when" or "No, it will never make it n there".

Thanks,
Ryan

Well TorqueX wouldn't be a complete 3D engine without some sort of terrain rendering. It would make sense that an Atlas like system would be implemented.

You won't get any argument from me on that. ;-)

I would also assume that the Atlas editor that is about to begin (or has begun) contract development would be able to work for both TSE and TXE. Just like the editor in TGB works for TXE. Ideally, whatever terrain engine that does make it into TXE will be Atlas compatible from a file format and tools perspective.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks,
Ryan
