Critical Need: TGBX Level Designer

by John Kanalakis · in Torque X 3D · 11/20/2006 (11:43 am) · 7 replies

With less than a month away from Microsoft's XNA GameStudio Launch (and presumably TorqueX as well) there's definitely a lot left to test. So far, we've been able to tweak and test the existing sample(s). But without a level designer, I don't think we are pushing the testing limits of the engine. With time running out, I think it's pretty important to get the TGBX Level Designer pushed out for beta testing. I'm certain that the first sales of TorqueX will come from TGB licensees interested in porting their projects. I think that process should be first beta tested by this group. We, Beta testers, should try to port over existing TGB projects that we're already familiar with to find more subtle bugs hiding within the TorqueX engine.

With the full source release you now can check out what can be de-serialized from a .xml scene file. (yeah i also can't wait till GG releases the tools for TGB to export scenes but at least with the release today we are capable of doing it ourselves )

I agree, today's release is a huge step forward. However, Beta testing is about taking the customer experience and testing for any and all variations. And for most game developers (new and old) , the Level Designer will be the foundation of their game development.

I'd be interested in hearing an update on this as well. Depending on GG's progress, I was looking at building a converter where you can just point at the TGB scene and it'll convert it to a TXE scene.

edit: of note from the Zeppmaster:

I don't know what the specific plan is, but you can be sure that we will want the TGBX toolset beta tested before we make it available.

The editor is simply not ready yet for even private beta. Rest assured, that will have a beta release of it as soon as we can.

@John - if you can disclose, is it simply a modification to TGB that you'll NEED TGB to use, or is it a seperate app that just does the conversion itself?

It's a modified version of TGB that can export to the xml format. Sounds basic/trivial, but there is a lot of underlying functionality involved!

Well, I don't have TGB, but I'm damn good with xml and C#, so if you don't require TGB to beta it, count me in.
