Organization is the key

I recently read an article in some game developer magazine that 70% of all failed projects did fail because of poor management and organization, those numbers pretty much shocked me for I am a pretty organized person. Anyways for anyone who has problems with organizations, I really recommend getting PHP Overlord available in the Products section here at Garagegames.com!

That article made me curious and I really want to know how everybody structures their folders, what project management tool they use, if any, and how they communicate with their team. So please go ahead and tell the community.

I personally use Overlord for my project management, Windows Live Messenger for communication along with the private board installed on my website and my folder structure looks different in most of my prjects, but mostly it looks pretty much similar to this:

...\Projects\Games\GAME_NAME\

Concept Art\ ***All the concept art for the game, with sub-folders***

Documents\ ***Documents like the Storyboard, the Script etc.***

Source Files\ ***The Project Itself with its entire sourcecode and assets***

I am really curious on how you guys structure your stuff!

They probably mentioned structure in a sense how you make your game, rather than how you structure your folders or what messenger you use. Not saying that won't make a difference, but those are really small pieces in a big puzzle.

I think what the article tried to tell is that to make a game happen you need to structure development of features and tech. How to manage your artpath, what features are most important, where to stop implementing new features and focus on what you got, chose the right plan from the beginning (ie. not a MMO typically) etc.

Here's Joe Maruschak's excellent plans on the subject :)
