In need of programmers and others
by Brian Irvin · in General Discussion · 10/07/2006 (3:24 pm) · 51 replies
Please do not flame me for this, but i do need some programmers talented in making games with toque+mmo kit, or java games in 3d. I am in the process of designing an mmo game something like galaxys but different. I look to include ground battles whether it be rpg style or fps style with air and space combat and seemless zoning from planet to space when flying your own ship. I would like players to land any where in the world except illogical place such as landing on water which is a given. Player houses and cities is something else i would like to include but maybe have it limitited so the worlds dont get over crowded. heres an over view. "Edonia Online will be a cross platform MMO game combining well known races from fantasy games along with some new ones. Edonia takes place in the future where the human race is finally able to traverse the galaxy. They have discovered that earth is not the only planet with intelligent beings. There are in fact races only before seen in tales of fantasy." So far thats what i have as far as the game design doc goes. I am kinda trying to decide whether or not to use mydreamrpg mmo kit for this because i am not sure if it is capable. I have one person willing to help with programming but isnt realy able to help out alot because of his busy schedule. I can handel doing most of the artwork as for skinning im still trying to do that, and textures is kinda hard as well animating i could probaly do but im not sure. Im not asking anyone to make a game for me i am asking for people who are willing to get together as a team. I am straight up no programmer and probaly never will be one. Havin said that one big big big thing about this game is that i want it to be playable on macs, linux based computers, and windows based. I am also looking for sound people, maybe some more artists to kinda take of a load for me, definatly some pogrammers. As for hardware goes i only have 1 web server with win server 2003 web edition, which i may switch to SUSE linux or any other stable yet free OS which is one reason im wanting to kinda use linux for servers. I will also need some people to help me make a website for the game though i could probaly do that my self, but i dont want it to look like crap i want it to kick ass just like the game i plan on designing. ok now ill shut up and wait for replys lol, please no flaming me. and it is ok if my other posts get deleted this is the one id realy like to stay up.

Its ok I do hope that the design document will change your mind or atleast consider helping. I have 2 people that will possibly beable to help out with programming one of them is also helping me with artwork.

If you want a world that is generated on the fly and uses the disk to terrain, it sounds like you will have a number of worlds that can be landed on and the world maps will probably be very big too, then I would recommend TSE. I've heard some good reviews on titus as compared to the TGE MMO kit.
Start the game with TSE now and by the time you finish it will be stable otherwise you will run into terrain problems.
As far as help goes, I would if I had the time however I'm very busy atm. Perhaps as you move along I can slot myself in somewhere later. brand_malcolm@hotmail.com, keep in touch.

Brian, you will be developing the mmo for a while so I would recommend you get titus. TSE isn't too bad as far as stability goes atm I seem to be able to create stuff with it. an example of some functionality would be
Melee system with various attacks, thrust, overhead swing, jump attack etc (based off server side melee resource),
Chargable attacks, that are interrupted when you are hit.
Critical Attacks
Critical Misses (next attack on creature is an instant critical)
etc etc.
i agree with hplus 1400% regarding people wanting you to work for profits on their first title when they are not a pro dev is just "ignant". Its pretty much saying "work for free for me because i wrote a story, and i will give you some of the profits from your work".

If you want programmers, list the functionality (especially uncommon functionality) you want in your systems, if you actually have unique ideas programmers will be more hyped than if you just want them to clone WoW etc.an example of some functionality would be

Lead designer: Brian J. Irvin
Assistant designer: Josh A. Jewell
Overview:
Edonia Online will be a cross platform MMO game combining well known races from fantasy games along with some new ones. Edonia takes place in the future where the human race is finally able to traverse the galaxy. They have discovered that earth is not the only planet with intelligent beings. There are in fact races only before seen in tales of fantasy.
Story:
In human history it was always though that humans where the only race to inhabit the earth. The fact is that at one time many races lived together. The wraith of humans warring nature was first felt from the beginning. It was for this reason that the now mystic races were driven from the earth. These races first fled to mars where they mastered the sciences and were able to push past their current star system. In the year 2020 human technology finally became advanced to colonize mars where they found the ruins and plans left behind by these many races. By 2030 speed of light travel was obtained which changed the course of human life forever.
By this time the domain of the mystic races extended across 3 star systems. Some of these races saw the error of their warring ways, casting them aside for a more peaceful existence. In 2032 a galactic alliance was formed between elves, dwarves, gnomes, trolls, goblins, wolvers, and Neanderthal, the closest relative humans had on earth. Will you help fight away these enemies or help bring down the Alliance

Player created quests
Ability for players to land anywhere in the world even own their own hangar
Seamless zoning from planet to space with atmosphere effects

I think you have potential as a game designer, once you get a little more realistic in your goals.
10/11/2006 (1:21 pm)
Brian, why do you insist on trying to create the hardest game you can? You have stated you have no programming skills, nor the money to pay for them. Companies spend millions of dollars trying to produce games that only have 1/2 those features. This is not an attack, you just seriously need a reality check. Start out small, you can always grow bigger.I think you have potential as a game designer, once you get a little more realistic in your goals.

No i dont think i need a reality check. and personaly i dont like being told something cant be done what i need is people who will help me, and i insist cause im nto one to give up, but hey guess i beter do it my self since no one seems to wana help here maybe i should take dreamers advice and post on his forum maybe ill have better luck there

No one is telling you it can't be done. The reality check is that you are attempting to start at step 500,000 in a million-step process. It is like attempting to paint the Sisteen Chapel without ever having picked up a brush or touched paint. But you've seen pretty paintings. You have a brush. You have paint. You just need to start small and work your way up to a managable state. It is not a matter of "can't" but a matter of become so overwhelmed with the magnitude that it "won't" happen.

I have no doubt that it will be hard and theres alot to it, but what better way to start off. yea it might hit it might not, but what if it did i could say hey me and this group made this killer mmo game you hsould try it. that would be more rewarding to me any way, yes it would still be rewarding to make a single player game and i pllan on it this is going to be the mmo version of it then i will probaly make a series of single player games that come before or after this story

In any case, the programmer(s) will have to program something very like a single-player RPG before they can make an MMORPG anyways. Programmingwise, an MMORPG is a single-player RPG plus networking and persistent databases on the servers.
Also, someone would have to supply servers for a MMORPG, and you need funding for that. You can use the profits from the single-player RPG to fund the MMORPG.
Your design document needs to be expanded. With your current document, the game could be any of the following:
a) a MUD (text-based)
b) a 2D Final Fantasy-like rpg
c) a 2D Fallout-like rpg
d) a Diablo-like action-rpg
e) a Zelda-like action-rpg
f) a 3D rpg
I think you want option f), but you can see there's alot of things missing from your design document. One time, someone asked me to make a "game with buttons that [blah blah blah]". I figured I'd use hypertext links instead of buttons and wrote a program that writes Html text adventure games. What he wanted was for me to make a clone of some Flash game he saw on the Internet.
You should find a design document template (there's probably several in the Garage Games resources) and fill it out. I have a design document template posted at http://www.cowgodgames.com/articles/designdoctemplate.htm . You will need more information than what it says, but it's a start.

Why not make the single player version first? Whether it's a single-player RPG or a MMORPG might not make much difference to an artist, but the programmer(s) have to do a whole lot more for a MMORPG than a single-player RPG.In any case, the programmer(s) will have to program something very like a single-player RPG before they can make an MMORPG anyways. It was going to be a star wars galaxies "NOT A CLONE needed to stress that point." liek game im not sure if you woulda considered it a rpg game or a shooter mmo before nge and all that crap. if i do a single player version of the game it will most likely be a shooter because i think it would fit the story line better in i think of rpg's i think of medievil like settings and not futuristic setings, yes i also agree there are some futuristic rpg's also but its just how i see things.

Ok. yes i know my typing is terrible but that does not nessacerly meen i cant spell. if yall want me to spell check my posts get garage games to add that to the forum. are you saying i cant make a SWG competitor or were you just refering to my lack of "spell checking"?

I believe that is what he's saying.

Well i think there is a miss conception. My goal wasnt to make a game to compete with swg i was just using it as a reference to how my game would be, much like it before the nge crap ill say it again not a swg clone.

Welll if it has less bugs then yea its going ot be a hell of alot better than galaxies. and if it hits in the garage games comunity and the mmo kit comunity then they will tell there friends then those friends will tell there own. guess i just contradicted my self oops lol. but you get the idea it may not be instant but yea as u can see over time it may grow fomr people telling other people.

What do you do well? Hone that. Join a group that needs that skill, but don't promise something that you cannot accomplish. Because people talk, especially among development forums.
Your model is dependent on a finished title. You are evaluating how it will hit and (hopefully) hit big. But right now you have next to nothing but years of development time, testing, and learning. You need to start somewhere, and hopeful dreams of hitting it big, while entertaining since we all have fantasies, are not that helpful in getting things done. They can be very helpful in convincing you to work at creating models or being a code monkey instead of logging into WoW or SWG or CS:Source to net with buddies.

SWG had millions of development and maintenance dollars behind it. You seem to be attempting to compete with a box market MMO with only the most skeletal notes as a design document and no experience in game development, networking, or MMO architecture. Again, aim realistic. I do not know how many of these projects I see constantly popping up on forums from very dedicated individuals (and sometimes teams). And while things like RealmCrafter and MMO Kit give some great tools, you still need to gain the experience necessary to utilize it effectively. You can buy every tool that Sears sells, but that doesn't mean that you can accomplish the skill level of a master carptenter whittling with a knife and a piece of wood. Even talented individuals must hone their skills to gain mastery. You gain mastery by doing. You work and work and work because of the eventual dream. What do you do well? Hone that. Join a group that needs that skill, but don't promise something that you cannot accomplish. Because people talk, especially among development forums.
