Assuming that you are not familiar with 3DS max yet, your best bet is to get instruction about every aspect of the software from a very knowledgable instructor or experianced user of the software. Learning how to use 3DS Max just for Torque is a bit of a waste in my opinion because there is just so much that the software can offer that you would be missing out on.

I have taken the liberty of finding the following URLs so that you can learn 3DS Max: Find a Local Training Center and a list of some of the Discreet Authorized Instructors.

Once you have a working knowledge of 3D and 3DS Max, then you can read the DTS Exporter Documentation that Joe Maruschak has written up and begin to use 3DS Max to produce art assets for your Torque game.

I know that this isn't the answer that you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

thanks for your reply and the links, altho my intention here is not to become a modeler, but to become familar with alot of the needed to know stuff for torque as i expect i will be working on it for a few years.

This will be a good oppertunity for anyone as i will provide everything from the computer to an actual place to upload the finshed test/alfa/beta's to, as i am hosted with the biggest gaming site in the world GameSpy.

www.planetquake.com/noescape/

I just think since i want to manage this project and others i should know a lil about what im managing, so i should learn a lil about it as i go,and the best way is have it right in front of me, the internet is just ok, but "live" would produce more results.

btw i am somewhat familar with max as i have imported weapons, modified, animated, and and exported them to dts and have them working ingame, but have not yet done anything from scratch.

I'm in the sacramento area, but don't use torque as the art path from max isn't very flexible. Been looking for devs north of the Bay area without success for some time now. But nothing much seems to be happening up here lol, the one commercial game dev I did work for for a couple of years was in west sacramento, but they pay really poorly, I made more from my EDD check after losing my job in the bay area than I made as an artist in Sac :)

Would be interested in meetign any sac developers if there are any others around

Ueah, I know what you mean. I'm in a 2 man dev team, we just finished our first game, bit of a pain sometimes as he's on the east coast. I have a lot of experience in creating art for video games, but am not really willing to use a CSG editor. My primary skills are 3D environments and vehicles, then character followed by texture art. I put textures last as until recently I have allways worked in teams with dedicated texture artists. But now that I have gone Indie I do all the art myself.

There are a few people in sacramento lookig for people to make games with. I get a monthly email from some place trying to arrange meetups in which there are about 14 people looking to make games for fun. I'll seeif I can dig up the URL :)

I resorted to getting my family involved, right now the kids (9 and 15)are just beginning to understand the basic benefits of having there own computers and gaming cooperatively on a private 5 system lan.
