Charlotte, NC - any game dev?

by Funky Diver · in General Discussion · 09/14/2006 (7:53 pm) · 7 replies

I'm about to move to Charlotte, NC, and just wondering what people think about that city... Is there any game development events, any game dev companies?

There are a few indie developers in the area (I'm originally from there and go back to visit my family).

The only game company I ever found did a flash deer hunting game like 5 years ago but there are several just 4 hours away in the Raleigh area, including Epic (makers of Unreal).

The makers of SpeedTree (IDV) are also just over an hour away south of Columbia.

There are also a handful of companies in Atlanta.

Oh, well... :) At least, south of Charlotte is nice. Maybe I should visit Epic studio...

I'm moving from Austin - nice city, but allergies are killing us (pollen fever right now) :( The last game conf was nice here though...

I live in South Carolina but work in Charlotte. Our game company is small (www.firesidexp.com) but is close to a contract for a AAA game. I love Charlotte. Alot of trees and the people are great! Charlotte is close to Epic but also close to other game dev or 3rd Party game devs. We like having our studio there.

We just made a small research about quality of life in Charlotte and were shocked by the high ranks of gang crime and quality of public schools... that made us to review our final destination and focus on Raleigh :)

I think it would be not so hard to find an IT job in the RTP area.

Epic, here I come... :P

I'm from the Raleigh area and it's been a good place to live. Along with Epic, we also have Red Storm and I forgot the name, but a pretty big game studio is moving from Minnesota to Raleigh.

I don't know how much you have looked into this, but the public schools here (Wake County Public Schools, wcpss.net) are getting really over-crowded. A lot of schools are converting to year-round schools, and I think by now every school has trailers attached to them for mobile classrooms. But once you get past high school, we do have Duke, NC State, and UNC all within 20 minutes of each other. And as you mentioned, RTP is right in the middle of the three schools.

Nice to meet you, Justin!

I couldnt see that the schools are overcrowded :). I still have like 7 years before my family will face it, I hope by that time they will build more schools :) I just was looking into the average school rankings - they tend to stay for many years in a region, IMHO.

I think, I will be finishing my game project to the demo stage and then will try to knock on the Epic's or Red Storm's doors as a tool or gameplay developer ;)
