exporter doc question

by Sakira · in Torque Game Engine · 05/07/2002 (2:53 pm) · 8 replies

In the exporter docs it says:
"Make a box that encloses the entire shape. Again, do this from either the top, user or perspective view. Align this to the world center as above. Name this box "bounds"."

This is in the first section of the doc in simple shape.

I tried to enclose the sphere with a box in perspective veiw but it wasnt enclosed in left.

I tried in left and it wasnt enclosed in front And vice versa vava blah.

Is it supposed to happen like that ?

Or is there somthing im missing?

plz help

If you are new to 3DS Max (or 3D in general) I highly recommend that you go through the tutorials that ship with your software and familiarize yourself with the program before progressing any further, because without a solid foundation under you, you are destined to fail.

But to solve your problem... create the box in the Top or Perspective viewport, and then use all of the other viewports to ensure that it is sized and positioned correctly so that it encompasses the mesh that you wish to export.

Hi, use the align tool to center the box on the sphere: click the align button on the toolbar, it should already default to center-to-center mode. Then check the X-Y-Z boxes and hit ok.

If the box is still inside the sphere you can scale it to fit by setting your pivot point mode to "use selection center" (button on tool bar - hold it down to change modes. You want the one with the red dot in the center) and using the non-uniform scale tool (same deal as the pivot point button).

Though it's probably not necessary, it's a good idea to reset the object's xform and collapse it (you can do both in the utility panel - literally two clicks and it's done) this helps prevent any weirdness later on.

If you get stuck on any of these steps the online help is a great place to get un-stuck... There's a maxscript out there that automates bounding box creation, I'll have a look for it and post it as a resource if someone hasn't already.

As for tuts, Max ships with a whole lot of great ones - very visual and they are your best bet for getting to grips with the package - you spent an awful lot of money to get it, you might as well make the effort to learn all it's features. Try going through the tutorial booklet that came with it. There's also some good ones online at 3dluvr

I posted a link to some that Autodesk put on their website (www.autodesk.com), you will have to do a search through the old GG forum threads or on the Autodesk website to find the video.

I havent looked at the video so I do not know what it covers, so don't dismiss those greatly written tutorial books yet.
