How many people bought the RTS Starter Kit, total?

by Wolf Dreamer · in RTS Starter Kit · 09/11/2006 (8:19 pm) · 17 replies

I was wondering how many people bought the RTS Starter Kit. I know everyone here did, obviously, but how many got it?

The community seems smaller than I expected. But it isn't size that counts, its quality of course. How many people actively post here these days?

Hi, I have the RTSKit but, I don't like because is too Slow and lost to my BASIC engine. I'm not a Active user of this forum because of this! :(:(.

I just purchased the RTS kit to play with today.

Mainly there may be ideas I can use to implement in the game I would liek to build.

I have purchased the RTS kit but I'm waiting for GG to update it.

I bought it, looked at it, it wasn't what I needed, so it sits.

I was also waiting for the upcoming release of Torque 1.5.

The way the Torque employee hyped all of it over at my Game Maker forum http://z8.invisionfree.com/Game_Maker_forum/index.php?showforum=44 I was kind of expecting something differant. It has potential though. That is, once they fix the server code, and other things listed in Torque 1.5.

I don't know how many people bought it, but if you go through and look at all the names in the threads over the years, it was a decent number. I don't think anyone ever shipped anything with it though, mainly because in all honesty, it just leaves too many hurdles for the average indie team to deal with. There are problems that were recognized and fixes promised when this product first came out (what 2 years ago?) and none of them ever came to fruition. I've toyed with it, ported it to TSE, made some additions, but in the end I wasn't happy with the results and moved on.

If your goal is to create an RTS this can help you get there. It's not going to be an easy road though.

I played the demo for the game Tribal Trouble and unfortunately mistakenly assumed the RTS Starter Kit had those features in it already, or could easily add it. I guess the guy just made it on his own through a vast amount of effort and talent.

I was led to believe that many things not listed as featured in the RTS Starter Kit, could easily be found in the forums, made by users who added to it.

Seeing what was possible, I decided to buy Torque and the RTS Starter Kit.

I like how with Tribal Trouble you can get a list of the various jobs there are, and then choose how many workers to assign to each task, them automatically and rather effeciently seeking out the nearest material of the type they were assigned to, to harvest and bring back, be it lumber, iron, or stone.

I didn't like the overall game design of it, having my own ideas for something far grander, however the peasant AI, and the other aspects of it were most impressive.

I've haven't really gotten started with this yet, have been rather ill lately, as well as being occupied by other things. I do plan on trying my best to master everything, and in time get the foundation for a proper RTS game. Got to spend some time looking through more tutorials and practicing one thing at a time, until I learn it all.

Does anyone know when the 1.5 Torque update is coming out and if the RTS Starter Kits gets anything new? If I go through the steps of getting the RTS Starter Kit to run with Torque 1.4, will it be difficult to undo those changes when Torque 1.5 comes out? Will any of the things that are made to run with that player made fix, not work the same or at all with 1.5? Looking over the bugs of the past, I'm a bit concerned, so was just procrasting a bit thinking the update would come along within a week or so.

Tribal trouble wasn't even made with the RTS kit afaik, it was written in Java or something I think which in itself was an acheivement as most people didn't beleive in Java as a viable game development platform.

I have to admit of all the things I've bought from GG, the RTS kit is one thing I feel like I've just been totally ripped off on, it didn't have enough to it to warrant it's price tag at release and now, years on it's still the same.

Java? But they list it as a game made by Torque.

How much of it was made in Torque and how much in Java?

GG sells games that aren't made with Torque as well as Torque driven products...a lot of games on that page are not made with Torque, and I didn't see anywhere in the page it said it was made with Torque :)

Wolf... the link you gave is the link to ALL the games GarageGames sells. And there are several games in the game store that are not powered by Torque.

I own it, I haven't done much but play with it right now as an RTS is a bit downstream time-wise for me.. starting off with TGB, then into TGE and thence to an RTS.

I'm hoping for a 1.4.x release sometime soon, but I'm not too worried as my needs are relatively simple RTS-wise.

Don't you find that rather misleading? Most people assume a company whose main thing is to sell an engine, would be selling only games made with that engine.

Is there a way to find out what games they sell which come from Torque and which ones don't?

When buying an engine, the first thing people do is look at the games made with it. If you have a specific type of game you want to make, you'll be convinced to buy it if you see someone else has a game of that type made listed on their engine's game page. You guys aren't deliberately misleading people are you?

@Wolf: A big part of the commercial license for Torque is the fact that they don't have to show a splash screen, and with the commercial EULA they don't even have to say themselves what engine was used.

If a game is made with Torque, and the developers authorize it, of course we'll want to mark it as such, but it's not our decision, it's theirs.

Nothing anywhere says "all these games made with our engine", and we've always, from the very beginning, had non-Torque products. Being a publisher is part of our business model, as is being a game technology developer--and no, we don't find it misleading at all.

We'll be releasing a RTS/RPG game using the kit very soon :-)

Stay tuned..
