Default to Third Person Perspective?

Hi, I've been trying to get a game to default to 3rd person perspective for hours now by just using the script... I've read all the forum posts I can find on the subject and have tried setting $firstPerson = false; and/or have tried using toggleFirstPerson(1); with no avail. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? (I'm not looking to modify engine code at this point, just script).
