Current status of $timescale?

Hi all,
is anyone currently aware of the functionality of $timescale?
I know it did work circa alpha1, then it didn't, but now it seems to be working again as far as I can tell. However I can't see where its reinstatement was documented, and I wanted to check to see if it can be relied upon? Any help would be appreciated :).
