Torque/1.5/WhatsNew

by Rex · in Torque Game Engine · 08/23/2006 (8:51 am) · 187 replies

-Fix for orbit camera jitter.:
-thanks, that was very jerky. I also noticed a bit of jerkiness with the flyCam in Editor Mode[F11], is this connected??

-#0001132: Fix for footstep sounds on different materials on Interiors:
-is this fixed for regular terrain too? I could never get multiple sounds to work across the terrain, only the texture in the first Slot position.

...and many more. Thanks from someone who can't just recompile, especially with support for the VS Express05; perhaps I now can! I see a lot of voodoo with the SimObject and saving/writing/finding....and console functions...! These seem like major changes from the way things were accomplished, am I right in thinking this?

Thanks,
Rex

@Trent

Special consideration will be given to those who have purchased TGE within the last 30 days before the upgrade. Please reserve judgement until we release pricing and release information.

As to the point that we failed to disclose this information, from the TGE product page...

Quote:If you've been away from Torque for a while, now is the perfect time to come back the the most active game development community around. TGE 1.4 now ships with a special getting started "Out-of-the-Box" experience level, that comes complete with a comprehensive tutorial that walks you through making your own 3D game. If you've been waiting to buy TGE, you won't want to pass this opportunity up. TGE 1.4 is the last free upgrade in the Torque Game Engine line. If you're looking for an upgrade beyond TGE, you should check out the Torque Shader Engine.

Actually, this is a direct quote from the TGE 1.4 product page:

Quote:
TGE 1.4 is the last free upgrade in the Torque Game Engine line.

This has been publicly and prominently displayed since we launched 1.4 in Novemeber of last year. It also has been discussed a number of times in the forums. We have shipped free updates for TGE for the last 5 years which goes way beyond the call of duty and is something you will almost never find in any other software product.

If you read further down in the EULA you will find the section that directly discusses the cost of upgrades:

Quote:
6. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY.

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OR GUARANTEED UPDATES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE SOFTWARE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LICENSEE.

Again, we have a really solid track record of taking care of our customers. Please take that into consideration before leaping to negative conclusions about us.

Will the TGE 1.5 changes be rolled into TSE?

Quote:

This quote is quite ambiguous. TGE 1.4 is also the current version, so of course it's the last free upgrade in the line. This is a big change to the way you've been delivering updates for the last 5 years. A change as significant as this warrants a much clearer notification. I read straight over it and dismissed it as your way of telling me that updates to the engine are free. Clearly you need to correct this for the benefit of everyone, and to avoid future rants from new customers.

I am also aware of EULA Section 6. I realise that you can and will change your minds at any time and that I accept. My point is about good communication to prospective buyers. I bought it accepting that things could change, but this change has been around since before I bought the engine a week ago, so clearly something needs to change. I hope you can see this from my point of view.

I am glad to hear that you will be giving special consideration to those of use who bought the engine just recently though, I look forward to reading my books that arrived today, and hopefully making my dream game come true. I have no problems paying for tools, I just felt the communication was not clear enough, especially given that it concerns money.

Thanks for replying so quickly.

And what about TSE for the free upgrade. you will need to pay for this too

Hi Trent,

I'm not trying to argue or anything, I just wanted to add my perspective - that statement is very clear and direct, but I'm also from the states, so it could come down to regional/cultural interpretation. Also there have been a number of threads in the forums regarding the upcoming upgrade, and keep in mind you don't have to upgrade. I'm sure whatever GG has lined up it must be awesome (time to go dig around in TDN some more :).

Hi Daniel,

GG has only ever mentioned TGE, besides TSE is only just now reaching 1.0, why would you have to pay for an upgrade so soon?

The fact that I've received free upgrades for the past three and a half years is kickass imo. I can't tell you how many times I've had to buy upgrades to all of my supporting tools in that time. When you consider the game engine is the most important part of our work it's amazing. So buying an upgrade now is no problem, in fact it's probably long overdue. :)

@John

See I'm pretty new here, I've been trying to find info about how to get started with the engine more than finding out about updates. An actualy list of what was in 1.5 piqued my interest though, so I thought I'd read... All I'm saying is I believe the statement could be made a lot less ambiguous than what it is. If it is a cultural thing, then it definitely is proof that it needs to be altered.

Having said all that, I chose Torque because it looked like it had a great community, great developers and a great tool and feature set. I still believe that, and I am still persisting in learning as much as I can about Torque to get my game going. So far I'm not getting far at all, but I have two new books to read tonight. Maybe they'll explain the things I don't understand.

I agree with John on paying for an upgrade, but not for a patch. Sure if 1.5 is going to have new features it is obviously something that should be paid for since GG has been more than generous up to this point. However, using John's comparison with utilty upgrades, if the product was released and later discovered to have faults or bugs, most companies release patches for free to fix bugs in their releases. Considering a large amount of the fixes for these bugs were provided by the community, it does only seem right.

But yeah if 1.5 has got new stuff, I will pay if that stuff will help my projects. I would just really appreciate it if someone would release 1.4.2 out on Windows and Mac since it is my understanding it is the fixes to the bugs.

It would be good if there would be different upgrade prices like:
- if you bought TGE after 1.4 was out price is XX$
- if you bought TGE after 1.3 was out but before 1.4 - price to upgrade is XX+YY$
- if you bought TGE after 1.2 was out but before 1.3 - price to upgrade is XX+YY+ZZ$
etc
This could solve problems with "recent" buyers

Let me think...

1.5 update of TGE wil have official shaders support and will fall back to low-end non-shader cards... ;)

..it seems like the TGE license was changed - it seems to be different from the version of 2003 year... am I right?
I remember the free bug fixes and upgrades promises...

I for one... DON'T like the fact that i bought TGE not so long ago.. (1.4 had just been released.. i think)
And now theres gonna be a 1.5 and i have to PAY for it'??...
Whats with the "free updates" promise... :(

but i kinda dont give a damn because i'll be getting TSE... so i guess having 1.4 is good for now.. until TSE final (standalone) Has been released...

Just an observation but don't you have to pay for upgrades for most software packages? What makes TGE any different? GG have never covered up the fact that 1.5 would cost. I know this has been said by others but the point seems to be lost on some people I think.

I dont think they ever promised free updates. They always just did it. Yes the license changed but that was way before 1.4 was released. I think maybe it might have been before or at 1.3 release. But anyways they made several statements on 1.4's release that 1.4 would be the last free update. It was posted everywhere and I believe this exact same barrage of people condemning GG over it took place.

You don't have to go to 1.5. Grab the bug fixes from the CVS.

Think about it, a lot of places charge for major release updates. GG is a business to guys. They have to keep the bills paid and lights on just like the rest of us. So please give them a break and lets all get back to our games.

I'm crossing my fingers that 1.5 will include Constructor :)

It used to be that many of the changes for previous releases were contributions from the community. Now that GG has grown and are working on the engine more than the community is, I can understand a nice update costing some $$.

On a side note, I do wish there was a way to have an artist's license that might encompass all of the titles and allow him access to forums, but then that's probably complicated and wishful thinking. =)

Edited for clarification and to add this:

Just happy to find out some info on this after finding 1.5 whats new.
Can wait, Will pay and understand why. Know GG will look after its 1.4 community. Assume 1.4 will get the bug fix releases but will go to 1.5 anyway.
This post isn't worth the fuss people are making over it.
Myself, i'm going to continue to learn about 1.4, get all my changes documented ready to quickly roll into 1.5 (when ever it is released) and continue to try and finish my game the way I want it.
Time to tap out some more code and not worry about 1.5, but instead be ready for it.

So how much is 1.5 gonna cost?
should i go with 1.4.2?
should i buy 1.5?
should i drop the tge and go for the tse?

why cant gg just work specifically on one game engine
even with payable upgrades insstead of all this confusion.

People spend way too much time whining instead of making something...

Marcus, I totally agree.

No one has to purchase 1.5. TGE 1.4.2 is a complete engine and you can continue to use it.

For those of us glad to see that Torque continues to grow and evolve after 6 or so years, we'll happily upgrade and enjoy our latest new toys.
