I never realized it before, but Tribes 2 has more gimps than any

by Matt Webster · in General Discussion · 04/29/2002 (11:08 pm) · 26 replies

Just from the few times I've been around Tribes 2 forums, I've been amazed how immature many of them are. Tribalwar forums have constant posts from people reminding everyone how much they suck, and how they are the most amazing person in the cyberworld. "Custom" signature images designed to make everyone else feel inferior, and cool phrases like "you suck ****" and racial slurs tossed around like a salad.

Even more annoying was over at G4Tv's forums, you know... the new Gaming TV channel. Half a dozen die-hard Tribes 2 people basically assaulting the entire community as long as they aren't willing to say that Tribes 2 is the only game worth playing. "Don't cover Counter-Strike! TRibes 2 is only game worth playing!"

I always thought people who played Tribes 2 were people who wanted good gameplay, and would have to be slightly more mature then the children who are constantly related to Counter-Strike and Quake. Now I've seen that it's just the opposite.

Strange indeed...

Sadly Matt, kids 13-17 are probably still one of the major groups of gamers. And with that comes a lot of immaturity. I'm not saying that all 13 to 17 year olds are like that, not that older players aren't sometimes just as retarded, but it's always the idiots who seem to post the stupidest crap the most often.

Specifically, The situation at tribalwar is quite sad.

That's the thing though. I've played many games, and met many decent folks and more than my share of losers.

Maybe it's the fact that it's a refined action game, and that might make the people think they're connoisseurs of games. That might explain the reason Tribes players tend to force their game down others' throats, compared to Quakers who sit stoned out of their minds laughing when someone gets gibbed, and Counter-strikers who complain that someone is using a better hack then them.

Yep it is a shame that Matt. I play T2 & do see it all the time. But it is even more of a shame that we are all getting tarred with the same brush as the TribalWar & G4TV hooligans. :(

Visit europe for an enjoyable game. Still loads of flames but at least were more civilised about it :D

Don't get me wrong, I understand that those people don't make up the entire community. Just more with Tribes then I've seen in the more shallow games, which almost seems contradictory for me.

Hehe yeah, I've noticed Euros are the most civilized followed by non-Korean Asian gamers. Worst is teenage Americans, and many Koreans I ran into when I tried out Lineage.

I began to think "**** you!" was my character's name in game. Those people take their gaming too seriously.

Well, here's the thing.

For the diehard community, play Tribes 1.

In Tribes 2, there are still a bunch of great servers, but they're hard to find among all of the people that picked up T2 at a bargain bin. :P

As for tribalwar.com -- I will only say that for a while, the smartest people on the internet were there. I mean, smart, talented, etc . . . it's not that they're being immature because that's what they know, they're being immature on purpose. :) You've gotta be used to it -- you've got to be able to start a "My GFX card is messed up" thread and not mind when the first three replies are "NO UNF!" because today was designated "NO UNF" day. :) It's hilarious.

Altho I dunno why T2 should get covered. T1 is still the most intensely team-skill-based competitive fps anywhere . . .

Hi,

Will Garage Games be doing a linux client patch for Tribes 2 also?

Cheers,

The idiots are unfortunately always the most vocal...but considering Tribes 2 theme and gameplay, what did you expect?

Matt, the T2 community is not in any way unique in the way you describe. Go to www.df3.net to witness the same, or possibly worse in parts of the Novalogic Delta Force community. Or the previously unmoderated World War II Online public forums (hard to do now, I guess :-), or ... (fill in the blank).

Many community forum owners are getting fed up with the online textual behaviour of many people, and there is a trend towards cleaning it up from a language perspective. As the language is policed, you see a marked improvement in the quality and nature of the discussions...

I've been in hostile communities (some people even know me as the king "revolutionary" against Funcom in Anarchy Online (or if you like Funcom, I was "that ass-punk") but I really can't say I've seen it get that bad.

Namecalling never extended beyond insinuations and everyone acknowledged it was a pretty mean community when the gloves went off.

I'd have to say there was a golden age of the 'Tribes Community', but that sadly has been dead a long time. I started playing T1 in Dec '98 and stayed pretty involved in the community ever since (up until about a year ago). I'd say the 'Golden era' was late '98 - May '99. The official forums were hilarious and refreshing and everyone was having a blast.

After that, everything started sliding downhill. With the eventual cancelation of Tribes Extreme and the problems during T2's launch, it was a pretty rocky ride for the older Tribes crowd. Most left early on and with the advent of TribalWar and the supposed 'diehard' crowd, it got pretty ugly quick. The community either got thick-skinned or the enjoyable contributers got sick of the bs and split.

I've taken the stance of not getting too involved with most online communities since. I've tried others, Delta Force series, Operation Flashpoint, Close Combat series (My first love and the most mature crowd I've come across), Hidden and Dangerous, Half-Life and its mods, but most got old very fast. Just got tired of the cumulative bs and mentality. I get my fill of childish acts from my own kids, don't really want to spend my 'fun time' eyeball deep in it. ;)

It seems like you're talking more about the forum community than those in the game itself. Forums are strange themselves, and Tribalwar is.. "special". Like the Something Awful forums are "special".

If you're in the right frame of mind they can be very funny for about 10 minutes before your brain starts oozing out of your head.

Me, I prefer b3ta for those "special" times.

I'm refering to both. Back when people actually listened to the voice commands and helped, waited in a HPC to fly strangers to the other base, stopped to repair you if you were damaged, etc. This was on pubs daily for quite a number of months.

Yes Matt they do. I found that out for myself. It's like
what Sony is going thru with Infanty pay 2 play right now.

Lol we will really need to put a voting / ban system into our standard torque engine lol.

There are a few good people out there but a lot of Grief players exist. I think it's just part of game culture.

That is exactly what I was wondering. Our Clan has one person who we kicked out about 2 months ago constantly getting into our chat room. Ive banned him but it lasts like one day and he is back in.

Now just for your info the Clan Im in is very mature (ages 17 to 52) and will not tolerate trash talk. This one recruit went out and made a scene on a couple of servers and was given a warning. Within 2 days he was just running off at the mouth with enough words to make a Sailor proud, well we booted him.

So the big question is when they (GG) makes any update will they fix the problem in the Chat rooms.

The group I game with are like me - fed up with internet play...

Yeah it's fun for a while, but then you start running into the sorta people you're all complaining about. We found it easier to chip in for a hub, and build our own lan every weekend. Cheaper on junk food when you buy in bulk too ;)

It makes trying out new ways of playing more fun, cause everyone agrees on the "House Rules" before you start. But I will admit that after a while you start to miss some of the random actions you find on the internet.

We think missing out on all the immaturity is worth the loss though.

The level of maturity you are stating is the reason you see a lot of locked/passworded servers.

If you limit the players to folks you know and have fun with it is the same as a Lan game, but on the internet.

Server admins on during play are a good way to police the games in progress.

If you want to see some REALLY immature behavior, stop by Westwood's Renegade forums. It's actually quite entertaining. The Diablo and StarCraft forums are about the same as well.

Meanwhile, I will have to say this about the community at Sierra's Tribes 2 site: They have been very willing to help me solve my problems with running the game. I didn't get the standard "Your system sucks! Go play Doom!" responses that people at other forums lash out with. They offered me detailed troubleshooting information that I could use to attempt to get the game working. Nothing worked, but that's another story.

Of course, that's a small sliver of the gaming community.

Theres a code snip in the libarary for an admin system. Its just a plug in you can add to your copy of torque that allows you to kick and ban people from the game. We are useing that code in our mmorpg. We had to modify it a bit to fit into what we need but it served as a good starting point.

A note on the imature people playing these games.
I miss the good old times when people took the time to help you out when you needed it. Command & Conqure Renegade still has some of them people but there few and rare. I myself still take the time to heal people and repair tanks and buildings when they need it. Now if only everyone else took the time to do the same thing maybe the side I'm allways on would win more then once every 5 games. :)

Thanks, Matt. But Doom won't run on my system either.

Tom, it's good to see people who understand that Renegade is a team game. I've played on losing teams most often because everyone deserted the base to go shoot bad guys. I've often found myself all alone in the base scrambling to repair buildings that are being shelled or C4'ed. And few people seem to realize that one of the best assaults is a good tank rush backed up with engineers.

In one game I racked up over 5,000 points within a few minutes because one engineer stuck tight to the mobile artillery I was using to pound the enemies buildings. I kept pounding and he kept repairing. It was a refreshing change.
