Anyone else think that GG and the community should build its own console??

No, it wouldn't become mainstream enough.

Have you considered the hardware and software cost analysis of console development from an engineering standpoint? I'm not talking about the simple logistics of having a desktop PC sitting on top of a TV running a stripped-down linux with GL and hardware acceleration (according to the driver specifications on the card, assuming that the consumer can get the exact same hardware to interact in the exact same manner). I am talking about cost analysis for creating and manufacturing a console which has targetable specifications and also just so happens to be tailored to technology shifts (Torque is not a static platform).

Yeah, I'll stump up the first 5mil of development costs. Who's next?

I'll stump up the second 2 cents.

I pity the fool who... Makes bad, unneeded Mr T. Reference and then insults himself because of it...
*cough*
I'd rather develop for a mainstream console, otherwise the game wouldn't reach a large potential market.

I dont see how this console would be able to stand on its own.

Wait a minute!
Before you guy's proceed any further, you should really check out this insightful article about a certain game console.
You might also want to refer to this if you want further pointers.

I myself am willing to offer my assistance as i have recently brokered a deal between myself and a widow from zimbabwe who contacted me a short while ago offering me a share in her husband's US$10 MILLION fortune.

IA game console would be a great idea, but i agree with the replies that it would be way too expensive. The pc is a good "console" anyway. 100+ buttons are PLENTY for any game. The mouse provides great control, rather that pushing the stick over, waiting for the player to turn around, and then if youre lucky youre not already dead. The bigger screen, graphics, and better sound would be a plus, though.

you too????

but honestly, going to battle with ms, sony and nintendo would be a good idea.

the pc rocks. I dont even own a console anymore.

Wow, a Nigerian Prince who can't spell Nigeria recently offered me a large sum of money. Hmm... where did that credit card go...

Seriously, this sounds like it would be a cool idea, but it wouldn't become mainstream enough to be worth it. And with Torque being constantly upgraded...

There have been a few discussions about this. I read that someone made his own little 'console' out of a mac mini. Wonder how that worked?

There is a pack you buy(like those 'make your own computer' packs) that gives you the basics and instructions & theorys on programming it. It is called XGameStation. Also, here is a book that might help.

But then again, I think you guys are wanting to mod a PC, right?

Hitting the refresh / reload button on your browser will create multiple posts. To avoid, after submitting a post it's best to leave the GG site altogether and come back to it. Then you can refresh to check for new posts safely.

OT: The "Go" button in Firefox reloads a page without resending form data, and is thus safe to use on this forum.

Na... you don't want it to be too big (business scope)...

There is a platform to build for.. get to work!..

It's already hard enough to crank out a x360 tse game much less build a whole console.

That's what Clone PC's and TSE PC is for...

I don't think GG has the finances for that.... besides, even if they did.... I have large doubts about how successful it'd be.... better off sticking to making the games rather than the consoles.

This is kind of a silly conversation. If Sega, Atari, Phillips, NEC, SNK, Nokia and who knows how many others can't do it, what makes you think a rag-tag bunch of guys with no money and even less experiance can make a console. Besides, there's already Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo and Sony will no doubt have their own versions of indie games services. Then you still have the PC indie game scene on top of all this. I hate to be one of the guys who say's it can't be done but I don't think we need anything else but great games at this point.

I also won't say it can't be done. I will say that it shouldn't.

The good news is, it's not needed.
