Setting up template in Blender..?

Hello,

***Does anyone know how to set up 2d planes that will show an image while editing meshes in Blender3d?

I'm a novice using Blender3d to make models and I've found a technique to make a "template" to use as a reference while modelling things - but I don't know how to set it up! The template idea basically is that I will set up two planes (parallel to x axis and y axis) with a 2d image of what I'm trying to model. I know that this is used in 3dsmax - and I know how to set it up in 3dsmax - but that is irrelevant since I don't have 3dsmax and can't get it.

To split screens move the mouse over the border at the top of the window. When the arrow transforms into a double arrow, right click and chose to "split area." You can do that a few times to make several windows with different views. Now in the "View" menu there is an option called "Background Image." Load the template file with that.

Good luck
