fanstay/sword combat game ideas

by Christopher Smith · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 04/26/2002 (10:15 am) · 5 replies

I've been working a game idea for a multiplayer game that is based around sword and bows rather than guns. It will be based in a fantasy midevil world, castles, kings and all that.
For a quick comparison, over all the game will be somewhat like Tribes2 only with a diferent theme.

Now I'm looking for some feedback and comments on some of the the ideas I havn't decided on yet.

1.Fantasy vs "Fantasy"
Right the game is just humans vs humans in a made up midevil setting, its fantasy but not "magic fantasy". If this a good idea or should their be more to it? Maybe different races? Magic spells? Would this be a "selling point" or just "more stuff".
2.Artillery
I had the idea for catapults, ballistas and the like, but should they be player controlled(players have to take up "positions" on the warmachine for it to work) or AI controlled (a couple of "fake" characters perform the needed actions to fire the artillery)?

Thanks,
Chris

check out realm wars first, to your right.

good idea about the realism part, i think its better to add the flashy stuff after you have a good 'reality' base anyways.

I like the idea of a realistic medieval combat sim. Maybe you could set part of it in a tournament setting for multiplayer. Have melees with different weapons and fighting styles.

I played a game on the Commodore 64 called Knight Games that was like that. Basically it was a series of tournament events. Archery, swordsmanship, pikes, flails and quarterstaffs. The idea was either to knock out your opponent in combat or do more damage in the time allotted. It was actually pretty realistic for its time.

I can't really think of any games out right now that use realistic medieval combat so you would have the field all to yourself.

I am going in that direction. My game is about Roman gladatorial combat. It will be more realistic than fantasy, but pure realism is annoying, so we will make some exceptions. :)

personally, I'm not into realism. I find it boring and uncreative to design.

But If you can make it good, then good for you. :)

I think it is a matter of taste. Look at the popularity of CS. I think the ability to do something you could never do in real life is very attractive to some people, myself included.

Sure, CS isnt realistic, but that is what I meant. Perhaps "reality-based" would be a better term. :)
