Some mythos have been "overgrazed" -- done to death. Greek and Roman mythologies definitely top the list of overused stories, with Egyptian and Norse further down the list.

How about some of the less well-known myths? Babylonian, Sumerian, Australian Aborigine, Mayan, Aztec, various Native American, various African myths... There are some wonderful stories that have gone unnoticed thanks to the grandstanding of Zeus and Thor and Anubis and friends.

Heh, come to think of it, that could be an absolutely hilarious storyline: Enlil, Czernobog, Astarte, Tangaroa, and a bunch of other neglected deities join forces to put those uppity Norse and Roman gods in their places. "Dammit, Enki, we're gods too! Why is Zeus living in an Olympic mansion with virgins feeding him peeled grapes while we're here in this friggin' trailer park?!"

Jealous gods have always made for entertaining stories. I can just picture Rauni, the Finnish goddess of fertility, working at Hooters to make a living. Or Xbalanque, the Mayan Jaguar god, selling shoes at Foot Locker...

That's basically what Gaiman's been doing for ten or fifteen years now; Sandman, American Gods, et cetera. In.. hell, I can't remember which book, the one where Dream and Delirium go looking for Destruction. There's the Babylonian god who runs a travel agency, and Ishtar is working in a strip club.

Anyway: I agree! Lot of great material out there and it should be used.

This is an awesome idea. :)

I read about an Africa MMO coming out. I thought that was cool.

LMAO i love this post..... anyways... i am just getting started on game development. I am starting my first 2 games and i have a 3rd lined up. the 4th game i have will encompass mythology from all over the world but i figured i would get experience in making games before i started this baby as it was the idea that got me interested in making games..... not to mention i hope i can get a better engine than torque (Gamebryo) r be working for a company that can afford such an engine and bring the idea to them.... but yes...... i agree that greek/roman and egyptian mythologies are overdone... however.,... i do not condone their games as long as the game designer can create a game that is still FUN to play...
