Bug from Hell (torque crashes)

by AzraelK · in Torque Game Engine · 04/24/2002 (8:07 pm) · 6 replies

Im puzzled on this one, so I hope you can lend a hand.
(I dont blame you if you get puzzled too) all torque engine related games load the menu then after a few seconds it crashes and drives my machine to some sort of "sleep" mode. (The video signal disappears.)

I have an ATI radeon 7000
windows 98 (SE I think)
Directx 8.1
450mhz amd cpu
128 mb ram
1 gb HD space.

P.s. I once tried to run the engine with the log on, and
(-log1) this caused it to work correctly. but it doesnt allow me to run missions.. So I was unable to keep a log.

I have reinstalled win98 (by deleting windows directory and then installing it again) and it didnt fixed the problem.

I assume you installed the latest drivers for your radeon, etc.

Does the crash occur in the initial menu, or only after you load a mission?

Thank you for repplying, to be honest Im not sure my drivers are the latest drivers, I have searched the ati site and I havent found any other drivers for this specific card.
The crash occurs in the main menu, I dont even have to load missions to make it crash.

It sure sounds like a driver problem. Here is a link to some drivers that should work with your config:

I curious about the -log thing... you said it ran fine with the log option, but you couldn't load a mission? The logging should have no effect on whether you can run a mission or not, can you describe what's going on there in a little more detail?

Well that worked! thanks, I was really stucked looking for the solution to this one =) it now works, Im back!

Im not really sure why Tim but yes, It did worked by using log it might have been just a coincidence though.

Heres a few things that I did to solve the problem.

*Reinstalled windows.( didnt solved the problem)
*Unistalled and then reinstalled ati drivers.
*Shut down a program called Hydravision that came with my card Ati radeon 7000 (Im guessing this one was guilty of most problems, if not all)
*Installed dx 8.0 instead of 8.1 (Im yet to try using dx 8.1 again, but I will tell you about it if it causes a problem)

Something very weird which happened when I was running on -log mode, is that when running torque demo 1.1 it refused to create a server, So I was able to see the menu, but not to play the game, the log file mentioned: "create server failed" let me see if I can find the log file to send it.

Once again thanks!

I've run DX8.1 with a Radeon8500 on WinME & 2K, with hydravision running, and never had a problem.

Latest drivers could definitely solve problems. Old drivers with a new DirectX could definitely cause problems... ;)
