Can somebody direct me in direction of some beginner skinning tutorials.. I have a little vehicle made, but I want to unwrap her and get one of my friends to skin it.. but, I have been trying to do as I have read in other places and just cant seem to get a grasp for it..

maybe this object is too complex or something...

Thanks alot

What you could maybe do is use the freeware plugin polychop to cut the number of faces down, then use the freeware plugin unwrapUVW to unwrap the recuced number, then add and smooth the polygons back on. If it works, which Im not sure if it does, then the new added polys would still be unwrapped, because they should just appear ontop of the polys you allready unwraped.

I havn't ever tried this, but I probally will soon. I actually just now thought of it, I hope it does work.

Good Luck in the unwrapping,
Michael

Actually I have just finished writing the documenation of setting up UVW coordinates for the application of a custom texture on your mesh.

I am doing some final touch-ups and should be submitting this document to GG tonight or tomorrow night. If you like I can probably throw a PDF version of it towards anyone who is interested and doesn't feel like waiting :)

just let me know when its posted and everything. I can wait fortunately ;)

got a few other projects to do, and i might redraw it al anyways to try and clean it up, design wise

maybe somebody who is good with max and all, could take a look at my max file and recommend changes etc. and maybe ways to clean up the polys..

um email me: byte@tsncentral.com,, if ya wouldnt mind

In Max4 there is a tutorial on mapping/skinning in the help files, its good for starters.

Tonight the file should be going to GG so that they can place it somewhere on the website whenever they get a chance.

Jeremiah, if you like you can email me a copy of your Max file I might have some time this weekend to take a look at it and give you my recommendations via email.

Karsten, that tutorial is also in Max R3.x but unfortunately the tutorial only deals with applying a texture to a model, not with unwrapping a model so that you can paint a custom texture for it. It's still a good tutorial to check out though especially since the unwrapUVW modifier is used in my tutorial a bit to help setup your UVW coordinates.

Patience young padawan, I will have this ready as soon as I can get some very important (and paying) work out of the way.

I will likely send you a PDF edition though to tide you over.
