Yea, it sounds kinda cheesy, but, itd be fun to have.
Ive just started the forum, and I thought Id just post it here, to see if I can get anyone to help. Its only been on for a day, so dont expect the forum to be bustling...
Ill admit, im not an expert on making games. I have no clue how to code, so thats why I posted this looking for more team members.
The forum URL is: http://z14.invisionfree.com/World_0f_Hogwarts/index.php?act=idx
We dont have anything down yet, but im going to work on some GUI, and the engine description.
Hope this doesnt sound too lame,
thanx

( IP Violation + MMORPG ) * Free = You're screwed.
Yes yes yes it will be as much a copyright violation as if it was a commercial product.

As for cheesy and lame, I don't think so -- not the idea anyway. Your implementation could be. ;) But HP provides a concept-rich fictional world with tons to do and lots to explore -- and a very loyal fan base. A social MMU, with limited RPG/FPS elements might do very well.
However, without written permission from right people, you will have a serious legal problem. If approached in the right way, JKR might warm to the idea of a fan-created MMO/MMU. You might consider putting together a well-thought out plan, with good concept art, representative screenshots, maybe even a polished, but limited demo. If you're a youngster, you might want to ask a responsible adult to help write the proposal. Probably someone who has read and enjoyed the books and is a competant writer. You might be able to find a young-at-heart English teacher who is willing to help.
Let me say that building something like this would be a huge task. You will need a lot of help from capable and dedicated people. But most of all, you'll need permission. ;)
I hope this helps,
Aaron E.

Genius lol.
Well, I guess Ill have to think of a new name for the game. It could have the same idea as Harry Potter, but not directly from it.
Right now, Im learning coding, so I hope that eventually helps.

@Chris: It is actually fun to work on. :)
First you can do something close to it and stay legal. If you read the books, you know that there is at least two other wizard schools. Who is to say that the rest of the world doesn't have wizard schools. JK Rowling only mentions a few.
Our project name is: "Barnmorr Castle". What is it about? It is a game based somewhat on the Harry Potter books. It will be about a Wizard school in the North America's. It will allow you to interact with other students in a game world. In my blogs I have some pics of what we have done so far. Apr 29, 2006 Blog and Jul 15, 2006 Blog. . We are creating alot of things like spells, potions, and creatures. None of them will be the same as HP. Even the number of years(levels) at the school will be different. As for the Houses and points...totally different also.

@Chris: You may want to buy TGE first. Also to get the effects you will need to purchase TLK. To save alot of time on coding... purchase MyDreamRPG MMOkit.

Well, since you can't afford Tge at this moment. I would suggest Quark for the interiors and Blender for the shapes. And for doing textures use Gimp. They are all free.

... and Excedrin for the learning curve on all three of those. ;-)

Actually I didn't find either one that hard. It just took time to learn them. Remember nothing is free... if it is free, you will still have to put effort and time into it.

It has a dif converter in the works that will make it great for making buildings and such, plus it's fairly easy to use. There are 2 versions, free, and $50.00.
The concept sound good. You just need to nail down what exactly you want to do with it.

For what it's worth, though, TGE is quite a bit cheaper than Photoshop.

Yes, those will be fine. For what it's worth, though, TGE is quite a bit cheaper than Photoshop.

If Photoshop is available to you, then you should definitely make the most of it. It can do everything you really need it to do -- and is considerably easier to use than the Gimp.

[Edit: Cliff beat me to it.]

Then the goal of the mmorpg could be getting to the top of the school, and also players could choose what class they wanted to be in, and those classed could have like pvp competitions or whatever?
Anyway, I'm not really an HP fan but, just some ideas.

Why not just name it Wizard's Academy or Wizard's School or something like that instead? Then the goal of the mmorpg could be getting to the top of the school, and also players could choose what class they wanted to be in, and those classed could have like pvp competitions or whatever?

I'd be buying that game for sure, MMOG or not, but with a 64+ player multiplayer mode ^^
10/02/2006 (12:54 am)
The Idea itself is great, but to avoid copyright and other legal issues, change the overall name, don't use characters from the movie and don't call the school hogwarts, maybe even leave out the school and create just a world of wizards with some harry potter-like adventures, maybe something like the dementors that are really strong and evil enemies?I'd be buying that game for sure, MMOG or not, but with a 64+ player multiplayer mode ^^
