Uv seams won't line up

I have followed tutorials to get a uv map for my charater in "lithwrap" (the older free one). it all sorta makes sense, but when i save the uv map checker board, it is just a black background with my white seam lines. then when i open it in milkshape to apply to the model, it's chaos. The tutorial is by "Psionic". any help getting MS to line the texture map to the charater would be awesome. thanks.

This doesn't make any sense. Please go into more detail. :-)
