Im the programmer and my firend is covering the modeling using Maya. Can I skip the first 100 pages and start on the torquescript section?

    Why not? Personally I would start at page 89 and browse over the basic concepts.

    You could. But then, on the off chance that your friend doesn't come through, you're left very confused. Besides, it's very interesting, the first 89 pages.

    It's good for you to read that too. Usually artists aren't very technical and someone with coding background has more chances at understanding the art pipeline.
