Software Needed?

by DizzyDoo · in Torque Game Engine · 06/09/2006 (8:09 am) · 5 replies

I'm hoping to buy this book, but what software do i need? Apart from TGE. Do i need Visual C++ as a compliler? A 3D modelling tool? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Matt,

Since you have the TGE licence, you don't technically need to recompile anything. The TGE 1.4 installer should have a precompiled version available for you to use. However, if you want to make changes to the engine, you will need to get a decent compiler. I use Visual C++ 7.1 (2003 version), but there are newer and free-er compilers out there. Check out Visual Studio Express 2005.

I like gameSpace for modeling static 3D objects. However creating animated characters or object in gS is enough to drive someone insane. Other options are Blender, MilkShape, Maya, 3DS Max, and soon (crossing fingers) XSI. Actually there are even more options, but this is most common list.

You might also look into a MAP or DIF creation tool for exporting buildings and other interior spaces. I use Cartography shop and love it, but others use QuArK, Hammer, and others.

I hope that helps,

Aaron E.

Thanks Aaron, so the book doesn't require a compiler, thats good.

I haven't gotten the book yet (couldn't find it in Borders or Barnes&Noble at last visit), but if for some reason you find that a compiler is needed for some of the examples, then the express version I mentioned above (which is completely free for all uses) should work for you. It's quickly becoming the compiler of choice around here (or so I hear). :)

Does anyone know where I can get support for ordering this book? I ordered this book some 2 weeks ago and I have emailed support, and anyone else I could find and no one replies to why i havnt received my book yet. I am at my wits end with this, its like Im being ignored completely! I starting to think I may have to do a charge back to get my $55 back, I cant believe how lacking in any kinf od customer support there is. I was so impressed by the site and the people, but the actual customer support is non existant. i wish someone would just say something anything about where my order is. Can anyone offer any ideas as to where I should go or who I should talk to about this, Id hate to have to do a chargeback becasue i really want the book, but I cant afford to loose $55

Hi Scott,

The guys at Garage Games have been moving into a new headquarters over the past couple of weeks. From what I hear, things have been somewhat chaotic with e-mails and utilities/net hookup, etc. That, coupled with traditional warehousing/shipping issues for popular books may delay things a bit for you. That's just a guess though.

So, I don't think you need to worry about losing money on this -- these guys are very cool.
