Beginning 3D

Hi everybody,

I'm mainly a programmer, just starting with TGE, and i want to make my own models. I have milkshape, which is good for low poly models, but i want something that models at higher quality. Blender has such a high learning curve, i haven't been able to do anything with it. As for Maya and 3DMax, these both bust the budget as game development is purely a hobby for me (especially as i'm not even at colledge yet!). What can i do?

I think you should try MilkShape. You don't need to get higher polygon models for game development.

Yeah the term "low-poly" doesnt mean it can't render nice models, it just means that milkshape is tailored for modeling things used for real-time, interactive games, while apps like max can also be used to produce high-detail prerendered stuff useful for movies and presentations.

if you're on a budget, MS is the way to go. you may also want to look into other middle-priced apps like lightwave and truespace.

Or try DeleD 3D Editor (freeware at http://www.delgine.com) which will have its own Torque exporter in a little while.

I'll try some more on Milkshape, though it has no UV editing, which annoys me. I'll also take a look at Dele3D editor. Any more comments?

Milkshape's got UV editing, just go to Window -> Texture Coordinate Editor. You can select groups of vertices by dragging a box around them.
