Model formats and other things

Hi all:

A few n00b q's I hope you don't mind

So far I have the following formats associated with Torque, please advise if any more are available for import:
I own Lightwave 3d Ver 5.6 and would also like to find out if I can create or import other formats (3ds, lwo etc) to LW and then export them COMPLETELY with animation and skins to .dts in Torque. Also what would be a good polycount for small RTS models?

3d - .dts ???
Textures- .png, .jpg ???
Sound - .oog
GUI - ???
Level/Maps - ???

Thanks in advance.

5.6? man. it's been forever since i used that.
I had a plugin for that one that'd let me import 3ds and a few others.

You'll want to check out the LW2DTS exporter and see if it will even work with 5.6

Roger that. I know it's old but I bought it 2 years ago with AURA for $150. Can't beat the price, specially for a non 3d modeller;-). Anyways I would appreciate some light on the total of formats and names that can be imported into TORQUE. I am looking for 3rd party solutions (buying some 3d assets) Thanks!

If by Levels/Maps you mean interiors (which is the same thing as a map in Quake and HL), the file format is .DIF. You can generate that with an editor like Quark or Hammer. I prefer Hammer because I am used to it.

As for 3rd party solutions, I would recommend that you stay away from the soldier pack because it has some problems that no one seems to want to fix. The new weapons pack from Exis looks promising, however.

Check it out here.

The BraveTree packs are also good. I have the girl pack and learned alot about rigging from that.

@ JAF
Well to answer your first questions completely:

3D - .dts. Exporters exist for Lightwave, Maya, 3D Studio, Blender. Though i'm not sure how good they are for the first two (especially your version of LW).
Textures - .png, jpg, gif, bmp
Sound - mp3, ogg, wav
GUI - Created with Torque itself, so no format
Level/Maps - Slightly ambiguous... Buildings and such you would create with a level editor like Steve said (Hammer, Quark, Cartography Shop, etc) but Torque has a "Mission Editor" to place objects and into your world.

Level/Maps - DeleD (http://www.delgine.com) might be what you're looking for. It'll support a .map export plugin in a little while too.

Steve I was actually thinking about purchasing the soldier pack. what kinds of problems are you experiencing with it? my line of thinking was:

soldier pack + exis weapon pack + ragdoll pack = professional-level fps.

The soldier animations are messed up. He doesn't hold his gun properly. I asked about it and was basically told to fix it myself. I am using it for testing, but I plan to get a new model before I release anything.

I really like the model overall. But that animation problem and my inability to get anyone to fix it would force me to recommend not buying it unless you just need a temporary placeholder. That is how I am using it.
