Triggering Relighting of an area

Greetings -
I'm tryin' to figure out how to do something very odd. I'm wanting to deform terrain on the fly. That by it's self doesn't seem like to big of a deal. However, the part that seems to be a problem is re-lighting the now modified terrain, because it ends up looking 'odd' because of messed up shadowing. Relighting the entire terrain is a bit slow, so I was wonderin' - has anyone seen a good way of relighting just a single, definable area of the terrain?
