Crazy question. (GG respond if possible ^^)

I won't hold anyone to their word. But if you have any experience to take a well educated guess, please do:

If I had a server that was

P4 3.0ghz~
Linux (pick a flavor)
2 or 4GB RAM
dedicated mode (on each)
supporting network thruput

Could I host THIRTY (30) copies of dedicated Torque if EACH copy only hosted 2 players. Or would it 'crap out'?

Or could it hold more?

Or if less, what is your guess?

Also, assuming each dedicated server copy of Torque is running a map similiar to Stronghold and the network traffic/server calcuation is simliar to a 3d shooter.

Any guesses are sincerely welcome :)

I just don't want to go skinny dipping testing if I'm sure the sharks are going to bite.

thanks.

Yes you can, the stronghold will take no more 50Mb of RAM. If your P4 is HT - even better ;)

Dual Xeon 2.6ghz would be even better, no doubt? How many copies of Torque hosting 12 players each do you think I could get running on the same config above in dedicated mode except using Dual Xeons 2.6ghz? :X

If you've got the HW,
this is easy to test right ?

just dl the free torque demo and try it out.
i'd love to hear the results.

we're currently hosting 40 to 100+ players in single server*
with a mission many times more complex than stronghold
and it's more or less fine.

(actually we have to restart the server every three days or so,
but i'm pretty sure that's something we've introduced)

30 instances is obviously a different ball of beans as far as memory usage,
so i think CPU-wise you're in the clear, but you might want to splurge on RAM.

I'm about to test 5 instances of dedicated TGE servers on P4 HT 3Ghz/2Gb/160 SATAII... We'll see. I think Torque starts to "choke" on big number of objects inside small area (camera frustrum), and that's the theory to check...

I know I can launch 40 copies of Torque on my laptop (PM 2.16ghz, 2GB RAM) with zero players each (thats the kicker) with less than 10% CPU use. Guess that's just an interesting fact because of the no players deal. (WINXP too with all my 'crap' in the background!)

Let me know what you figure out.

This information (or at least an idea) is rather crucial to me.

thanks :P~

p.s. any recommendations on good dedicated server hosting companies?

You got the demo, just try it out and see how it works?

For anyone reading this thread looking for the information I was curious about:

Some initial tests with the unfinished product has shown me at a P4 3.0ghz with 2GB ram can VERY COMFORTABLY host 20 games of Torque 2 players each, or any config of 40 players (keeping in mind I never tested 1 game with more than 12 players, because that is max players per game in my product).

Also, by 'VERY COMFORTABLY' I mean I could definately definately host more. However, I'll post a blog later with CPU use, etc stats once I get the box as being Linux and chuck all the bogus stuff running in the background (of the current windows box).

Thank you everyone for your input.

Also, if you'd like to post any of your results, please do! :)
