Number of cells

This is more of an art question but what is a good minimum number of cells to have a smooth looking animated sprite? I have a cartoony look for my game but I'm unfamiliar with what would be a good number of cells to make the animation look smooth. for instance a character walking.

I guess it depends what other actions your character is doing at the same time. Is he swinging his arms back and forwards, is his head bobbing up and down, do you need to run the animation at a particular speed in order to make it fit with the speed of movement?

I'd guess a fairly simple walk could be done in 4 frames, but if you have exagerated arm movements, you might need 6 or 8.

The animations I did for Manny has oodles of frames, but you can easily chop out a few here and there without impacting on the smoothness too much.

You might just need to experiment.

I Highly Highly Highly recommend the Preston Blair Animation books.
Its got all the your walk cycles, jogs, trots, etc broken down.
