The Revolution is over! Nintendo Wii it is.

April 27, 2006 - Nintendo revealed this morning that the official name of its formerly codenamed Revolution system is Nintendo Wii.

The Big N explained the decision behind the name in a statement, which we've provided below:

Introducing... Wii.
As in "we."
While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

I wouldn't say that Wii is a gay name. Well... maybe... if you are having fun playing and say Wiiiiiiiiiiiii!! like when you are a kid and you are swinging. Maybe then it would be a gay name. Or do you mean gay as in homosexual? Do people actually still use the word gay as a way to say something is bad? I thought that went out of style 20 years ago when I was a kid? Well. I expect to have a Wii when it is released, because I like Mario. Despite the goofy name. Do people still use the word goofy?

Lol Ahhh man you guys are too much. You just took that stupid name and ran with it. I'm sure everyone else in the world is doing the same. I just seen on Gamespot.com an article header about Madden football on Nintendo's new console. "Madden Rushing to Wii". I doubt they were trying to be funny. I've seen many articles that had "rushing to" in the title. Bad marketing all the way around.

Why would a company as prestegious (spelling) stoop so low as to a petty prank? For what? I think they threw that name out there thinking it'll be cool like Sony's PS3 boomerang controller and when the world clowned them they tried to cover it up. "Oh it's just a protptype controller" "Oh it's just a prank name" Yeah right. That name was licensed under a dummy corporation so nobody could see what their special ultra cool name would be before they light the world on fire with "Wii". Now it's just a prank. Ok.

The TrashTalk guys over at illclan have a funny little machinima piece about the Wii. (Which by the way they use Torque for their episodes.)

Reading the Wii site over at nintendo.com, I came across this little tidbit:

Quote:
Virtual Console: Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets.

Any speculation?

Thanks for reading my first post...

Honestly, if you're going to get this upset over a stupid name, then I've gotta ask just how old do you think you are? I mean, I've heard so many bad Wii jokes I'm going to scream. But, really, this is all about Ninty trying to make a fresh start for the industry. Didn't anyone think the name iPod was wierd at first? How about the name Windows? How about the freaking "Mountain Dew EXTREME" Xbox?

That was quite a bump for quite a useless post, you could have at least added a comment about indie development on the Wii.

Well as far as indi development on the wii, it's all going to depend on how easy nintendo makes it for indie developers to get their hands on development kits and software. Microsoft has shown us that they will make it fairly easy, we'll just have to wait and see what nintendo has to say.

and yes the name was ridiculous, and no i don't think anyone even cares anymore.

@Randy
It doesn't change that it is more fun to play than any console in recent memory except for perhaps Kirby Tilt and Tumble on the GBA. Sure, some of the games for a number of consoles are better and more fun, but nothing that I have played (and I play a lot of weird Japanese games with controllers which were the inspiration for the Wii such as Music Maestro which came with a conductor baton) has been as fun to play. Of course, I bought Gears of War and ended up playing PacMan all night from XBLA, so my definition of fun is extremely skewed.

There will be a number of lawsuits, though. As you noted, the carpel tunnel ones will be the most pressing and probable the most present because of a lack of proper support.

They wont get anywhere with lawsuits agains Nintendo. They are suppose to read the manual before even using the remote (as per the warning as soon as you turn on your console). They state in the manual clearly the correct way to use it, recommended playing times and so forth. Unfortunately this means they legally disclaim the needed facts which will inhibit anyone from being able to press charges. Unless of course one explodes through no fault of the players and injurs them or their property.
