"Nightmarish game"

When I first came up with the concept for this game, I wanted to make it feasable to current technologies. With this in mind, I started to design game play that can acuatlly be done today with the current flock of 3d engines. I want to create something more of old school console type games for the pc.
The game i'm currently designing is a 3rd person game. I'm sure most of you guys already played Alice or Rune. Yes, I know, not so innovative for me to create another 3rd person hash of Alice or Rune :), but I do find those games fun, and for this design, I hope to improve upon these style of games.
As of now, the title is called Joe's Nightmare. You play as Joe. Trapped in a dreamworld of hellish nightmares. I've not acutally started writing the story, but this is just a general idea (Anyone watch the movie the Cell).
Anyways, i'm gonna be using oldschool console formulas for game play. An example is through each level you will fight an end boss, the boss will give you certain powers. These powrs will be needed to pass other levels. So as the game progresses it requires more powers. So lets say you kill the first boss, and get a super jump power. On the next lvl, that power is required in certain situations for you to use effectivly to pass. In some cases the power is necessary to kill the endboss (Megaman). There will also be mini bosses. With mini bosses, they will grant the player weapon like owerups. These are just some things i'm reusing from games i've played as a kid.
The type of engine i'm aiming for is someting like the Unreal Engine. It is easy enough to script for it and create a modification. I've already thought of most of the powerups and its all do-able in UT.
Some things I didnt like about Rune is killing those god dam skeletons for 30lvls :). Powerups I never really need to use. Oh, and only 2 bosses throughout the whole game. What happened to killing a huge boss after each level, like console games :). Besides that, the game totally rocks.
As for Alice, amazing visually, but control wise? argh, I thought it was horrible. The combat system was crappy, and she leaped like a frog. I can't say much about Alice cause i've not played through the whole game, so maybe my opinion will change when I buy it, but Giants is looking mighty apealing to me :).
Any feedback would be great. I'm still trying to write a design document for this game. Ideas are plenty but implenting it is the hard part!
