From DTS to Blender exporter?

by Rojalee · in Artist Corner · 04/14/2006 (6:31 am) · 5 replies

I have purchased several packs of objects and characters, but want to change them and make them my own.

did the packs come with models for blender that I can change to my own liking?
Or do I need something to export them from DTS to blender format?

Thanks in advance.

Some of the packs for sale here do come with blender meshes. I have not seen any of them come properly rigged for export, though (at least, not that I can recall).

There is never a way to go from DTS to Blender. It's been discussed many times, and it just will not happen.

Your best recourse is to rig them yourself, or make up your own models (you can use the bought meshes as a starting point, or use someone else's rigs for your purposes).

Don't say "never." There are ways to import dts files. Look at the project Shaper. I thought I read somewhere that there was a DTS importer for Blender, but it was discontinued. With the source code, you CAN do anything.

Ok, true. There WAS an importer to Blender. That was a loooong time ago, and I've not seen the code for at least a couple of years. With all the progress made, you might as well start over.

I was not aware of Shaper, so I stand corrected.

Each pack has it's own rules (license) about modding etc.

I thought I remembered someone in the GG staff asking James Urquhart (originator of the Blender DTS exporter) to discontinue the importer, since some of the artists felt like their art would be stolen.

I can understand that position. With a DTS importer, you could buy any TGE game, import the art and use it as your own (by changing the mesh a bit, it'd be hard to track down illegal use).
