Low wage artist for your hobby projects ?

by Steve Bisson · in Torque Game Builder · 04/10/2006 (7:14 pm) · 9 replies

I was wondering if hobbyist would be willing to pay small fees to have a quality artist work on their projects ? I read a lot of programmers in here wish they could have good graphics for their games and are struggling to find a team mate or graphic packs.

i could cover all the art department ; graphics , music , sounds. Would hobbyist be willing to pay for such a service ?

what do you think ? is an video game art studio for hobbyists a good idea ?

how much would you be willing to pay for something like this ?

Hmmm... It depends. For some of us (I know for me, at least), playing with game technology and building small games is what I enjoy and do for shits and giggles. It's not something I'm trying to make money at. I wish I could find someone on the art side of the house that had the same motivations. Programmer + artist = good stuff. But, as I said, because I'm not interested in making money or building a career around this, spending money is low on the priority list. It's just a hobby. If my hobby stuff looked better, terrific, but it's not something I'd be willing to pay for until I was sure I was really on to something.

Just my 2 cents,

Jason

@Steve- I like your stuff! I also like the idea of "art studio" . As far as how much one would pay- I don't know I'm just a 1 man team with a budget of "zero" so I guess I am the ultimate hobbyist :-)

Steve,

I like your style a lot. The graphics for your Lumines clone are great as well as the shooter graphics. It's very Designers Republic, which is awesome.

I'm an indie developer with a plan to get my games distributed once they're complete and I was planning on hiring a studio to do all the art assets and character design. I currently have two games in the works: One is an action-puzzler that will feature primary color style graphics for the pseudo-casual audience.

The second game is a rhythm style game (in the spirit of Amplitude or Frequency crossed with a little Lumines) that I'm thinking would need a more DR art style. Very hi-tech/futuristic. I'm a composer as well so music would be pretty much covered but I would be interested in talking to you about creating design assets for it, though it's just in the concept phase at this point. I hope to start development on it within a couple of months when the current project is complete.

Let me know if you'd be interested and we could discuss the details. My email is dennis@disposabledna.com

Steve,

I'm interested as well. I'm a small indie developer currently working on a side view football game. My biggest hurdle is creating player graphics and animations. I'm currently looking for someone to do them for me, in a Tecmo Bowl sort of way.

Please let me know if you would be interested in working on this. You may email me at kneekick@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Tony

I'd be willing to pay something, I don't know how much. I've seen some artists that are near charity and some artists that ask for truly dizzying amounts of money.

Personally, I prefer working with local artists. I've worked on a few projects with remote team members managing content production and it almost always falls apart during the concept/revision cycle. Then again, I'm an artist myself so I'm usually quite ogerish when it comes to asset quality, but I never have the time to do it myself anymore.

My biggest hurdle when it comes to finding artists is usually when I want a 2D animator/cartoonist.

I think if you look at a pure hoobyist then you're looking at a low dollar amount for the art, but if you make a whole site of all low budget 2d and 3d graphics then I don't think it would be too hard to sell enough of each graphic to make some money

I can't see the art because the links are broken... maybe the site is down/off?

A shame, pretty interest in an artist for my projects...
