does any one here know about the SCA? i think they would be a great source of information about melee combat, as they take their enactments pretty seriously. i sent an email to my local group but i was wondering if any1 here has firsthand knowledge.

gil: thats ok, theres some UK group i saw that takes their reenactments pretty damn seriously, though theyre doing the turn of the millenium period, so no real plate mail, or stirrups (dont think they had them yet), etc. funny the things you learn, like swords were rare, and spears the ubiquitous weapon.

I believe he's talking more like a thousand years ago. "Turn of THE millenium" not "Turn of THIS millenium".

Highsmith:

I must say that the SCA is a great resource for those of us into Early Music - As a lutenist/violist they have been quite helpful providing resources for real in depth research, even bringing to my attention music I never saw at the conservatory... and what lutenist doesn't sound better after a few pints, eh?

The SCA folks I've been around were not as obsessed about combat as they were with costumes and music but they are a wealth of resources for anyone who wishes to delve deeper...

Western vs Eastern combat types are rather easy to sum up. ( The general points that is.)

Western combat due to the use of sheilds tends to be
Overhead swings and thrusts. Hence the use of heavy broadswords / Inflexible spears.

Eastern combat rarely involved sheilds.(Japanese never used sheilds.),so quick slashs and thrusts tended to be the norm. This lead to the use light balanced swords and long flexible spears.

I wonder how well a SCA video game would do, especially if it was "official".

LOL, I'm not to sure a SCA simulator would make a mainstream hit or not. But it might be a sleeper hit. :)
