UVMapping issue

I've got an issue with milkshape. I think its a something I'm not doing right.
when I export my model (a scooter) as Wavefront OBJ so that I can do UVMapping on it. The UV Map is simply a large rectangle. with no degfining shapes or outlines as one would expect to show where tires are as opposed to headlightes etc.
I was wondering why this is happening.

If it's everything that's being displayed, the large rectangle is the current uvmapping so far. Remember that the uvmap for a custom mesh won't come out with planar, box, cylindrical, or whatever type of mapping that shows the entire mesh until you do something yourself (unless it's just a bunch of primitives with automatic texture coordinates)
I'm assuming you're using uvmapper classic if you're trying your uvmapping outside of milkshape3d, since pretty much any other uvmapping software has a 3D viewport which makes it obvious as to why something's not showing how you expect it to show.
What you have to do is make sure everything is selected and remap all of it as planar along an axis. This'll imitate a side/top/bottom/front/back ortho view, and there you can select your parts of the uvmap and work with it. If you're using milkshape3d to map, then it's simply a matter of selecting the objects in the viewport and going into the texture coordinate editor and remapping it. This also applies to any other software except uvmapper classic.

and http://www.google.com, and the support forums for milkshape3d.
If you find MS3D insufficient, here's some alternatives:
Blender has uvmapping tools that seem pretty handy, as does Wings3D. Both are free.
Some stand-alone uvmappers are DeepUV, UVMapper Professional, and Ultimate Unwrap3D. Each have demos you can try out (DeepUV lets you save your work for 30 days).
There're free uvmapping plugins for almost all the major commercial applications out there.
[edit]Oh, I forgot about Lithunwrap. There's free downloads for that software still floating around the 'net. It's an earlier version of Ultimate Unwrap3d.
[edit]And don't forget Gmax...

Milkshape3D only allows for planar mapping and manual editing. The only links I can give you arehttp://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/tutorials.html
