Now released: A Day At The Beach
by Solo Hans · in Marble Blast · 03/26/2006 (1:33 am) · 34 replies
I thought I'd give the MarbleBlast forum members 'a head up' on my new level. I started a new level inspired by the
unused textures in the data/interior folder. A Day At The Beach will use water and sand textures (6 in all) and some
custom interiors. It will be a simple level with medium gold time and NO, repeat NO qualification time(after all it is ADATB).
I promise some surprises and fun.
Expected release date: April 1 2006. :)) edit: Actual release: April 17, 2006.

I just thought of an idea to make it cool, and will make the new interior tonight. I'm going to split the level up. I'm kinda borrowing from your tutorial idea...but, I don't want to give to much away at this point.

In splitting the level, you mean we have to get in some way from one point to another? I would use a fun gravity modifier path so that the marble hits all the gravity modifiers until you get to the other side!
Perhaps do it in a blue tube with some pictures that look like sharks etc. So you have one part in the beat itself and then fall down to the sea itself :)
It doesn't have to be gravity modifiers.
Perhaps start at the car park (you have the road interior from skyscraper) and then continue to the beach and then under the water (perhaps The Wave [level] can help you to make the impression?). Perhaps OutofBound trigger if you hit the waves, or you want to do it in 3 ways: Beach, on the Waves and Under the sea surface (waves).
So many possibilties :D

@Matan: Great ideas!
CAUTION: THIS EDIT CONTAINS SPOILERS AND MILD GRAPHIC EXPLAINATIONS OF MY UPCOMING LEVEL: A DAY AT THE BEACH
edit: Yes, I'm splitting it up between a kiddie section and the 'great ocean,' although I like the idea of creating an underwater 'cavern' of sorts, where player could seek creatures and plant life there. If I knew how to make platforms, I could design a platform to look like a creature and have it move about the ocean floor. In this screenshot you can see the kiddie section-the next post has the 'ocean.' Of course, I will incorporate 'waves' level and what's an ocean without SHARKS. This section (ocean) won't be for the 'faint of heart.' The kiddie section will prepare the play FOR, ahem, the 'ocean.'

Actually, the level won't load from the custom tab...it has to load from the editor. It crashes if I try to load from the custom tab.
Anyway, I'll have it done 'fore the summer fashions hit the stores.
Here's a 'nother preview

Just an update for anyone experiencing the above problem(unrelated to the level 'ADATB'): I found that somehow I created(or MBG created folders and directories in my home directory. Go figure. So any levels I create now I retrieve from this directory rather than content packages. NOTE: I'm using an Apple computer with Tiger installed.

There may be a delay in 'Beach's' release. I edited a level using MBG editor and saved it to data/missions/custom folder, but now I can't find the file(surf.mis). The funny thing is the level loads from the custom tab and I can see from the console that it's loading from there too? Could you tell me if the marble floats or sinks in the water? Also how would you do the "reduced gravity" effect in water?
#9
'reduced gravity' can only be achieved via game modification or mods as they are sometimes called. This requires a rewrite of the script that changes the physics of the game. Unfortunately, this would change all the levels in the games unless there was a way to load these physics with just one level loading. I won't make a mod because it's too confusing for the player to install and there's a chance the player will lose their original file and mess up their game. In addition, Mac and PC seems to have different directories for some items, so I would have to have a version for each operating system.
All this said, I believe when finished, you will still enjoy playing 'A Day At The Beach' because it will have new interiors and a challenge.

Well, I could decrease the scale to almost nothing(i.e. 0.000000001 0.00000001 0. 00000001) and the marble would fall through the interior at that point while retaining the texture. I won't do that because I don't particularly like that 'bug' and it isn't essential to my concept, so far.'reduced gravity' can only be achieved via game modification or mods as they are sometimes called. ADATB will be released sometime this week. Just fine tuning and beta testing.

My current record:
1 minute and 12.040 seconds.
I believe I can do less, but it's very hard to do sub 1:10 minutes.
I got a very good pathway.
Kudos to Solo for all of his hard work and the time that he put into this excellent level! I personally think it's a perfect 11/10 :P. He could've released it earlier (probably a week before) if it wasn't for my e-mail, which didn't even give me his letter.
Excellent Job Solo, it's something never seen since A Walk In The Park.

Although Solo changed for me the position of the start pad (he made some changes from the latest version I had to this one), I still beat the gold :)My current record:

Originality: 10/10
Fun: 10/10
Challenge: 50/10
This level is impossible! It took me about 20 tries just to get the gems in that first set of waves. Then I tried to get the one behind the tornado but it kept throwing me out. And if it's not that, then I get stuck in Vortexia. But then again, I don't have even 1/100th the marble skills that Matan or Hans do...

Note: In truth, I only have average skill at MBG and still haven't finish all the levels. Stuck on Icarus.
Glad you liked ADATB. I hope it will make MBG players happy and look forward to summer and the beach.

Thanks for the early ratings and reviews. I guess it's it more of an advanced challenge Bobby. I think my next level will be easier. Note: In truth, I only have average skill at MBG and still haven't finish all the levels. Stuck on Icarus.

Aaaah, Bobby, I got a pathway that stops all of your problems in one go. My computer kinda lags because of this level, so I finished it while having a 'laggy' run, but it's a good one anyway. My main problem on this level is the gem on top of the second wave (the highest of them).

Solo, when you'd like me to post my pathway?

You can post it anytime.

A Day At The Beach.
Pathway by Matan.
The gold time seems hard to get, but I found some good tricks. It's a good path and if you practice it a bit, it's easier with time.
1) Start by rotating the camera 180 degrees to face the gem behind the marble. Start pressing W+D and before the announcer says go, stop holding it and leave the marble to roll on the gem. Rotate the camera and press W+A and jump back to the Shock Absorber.
2) Get the Shock Absorber and fall down. Rotate the camera to face inside of the sandcastle. Before you hit the ground, activate the shock absorber.
3) Get the gem and roll to the Super Jump. As you get near to it, slow down, but don't stop.
4) Get the super jump and activate it (don't jump and then activate it!) and you'll come to the top of the stairs. Now, before we hit the gem. Press backwards (S on the keyboard) and get the gem and fall down the stairs. Rotate the camera 180 degrees again.
5) Go forwards and enter the part with the sign that points upwards and above it, a gem. To get this gem, simply keep on rolling fast into the wall, and before you hit the wall, press jump. You will jump backwards on the gem and hopefully, out of that hole.
6) Go back and collect the super jump that JUST appears. Go right and enter the room where there's nothing inside to be seen. Jump and activate the super jump. Activate the super jump that you collect on your way upwards and then hit the gem and fall down, while pressing S.
7) Easily (hopefully) go out of that part and rotate the camera to face the last gem in the sandcastle. Press forwards and grab it. Press Backwards and left and get the super speed outside the castle.
You should have around 20-23 seconds in this point.
8) Actiavte the super speed as soon as you get it and go to the left. Slow down as you get to the kiddie pool.
WARNING: THERE'S AN O/B TRIGGER IN THIS POOL! IF YOU ROLL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POOL, YOU GO OUT OF BOUNDS! IN ORDER TO NOT ACTIVATE IT, PRESS JUMP AT ALL TIMES AND DON'T ROLL ON THE BOTTOM OF THE POOL AT ALL!
9) Get the two gems on the left by jumping on them. Keep on jumping and rotate the camera to face the gem to the right. Quickly get it and roll/jump to the left, getting the remaining gems. Now quickly jump to the right and then head to the super speed on the right again. Activate it as soon as you get it.
10) Roll forwards and start slowing down as you get near the sea. Go left and get the gem under the umbrella.
You should have around the 37 seconds mark in this point.
11) Roll forwards and to the right and time your jump so you get the gem withou the wave popping below you. This should happen right away as you got the gem (so you won't need to stop at all!).
12) Keep on rolling forwards, get on the wave the start holding W+D while jumping. As you get on the wave above, slow down and get the gem. Rotate the camera to face vortexia and press W+A and fall off to the floor.
Notice: If you get the gem before the 1 minute mark, you can still (although harder) get the gold. Otherwise, you're in big big trouble and there's a very good chance you won't make the gold. If you do it up to the 55th second mark, you can still get gold with ease!
13) Jump to the left side of the platform with the tornado (between the main sea and the 'vortexia' sea there's a small bump, you need to jump over it to save crucial time!) and grab the gem. Keep on pressing to the right and try not to fall into vortexia. Rotate the camera to face vortexia and go a little bit to the left of the gem you took.
14) Align with the gem in front (and below) you, so that when you roll inside, the tornado grabs you in and you get both the gem, the time travel, the second gem and thrown into the air. Practice this until you get it right.
15) With the time bonus and speed boost from Vortexia, roll forwards and to the left until you're to the left of the tornado and almost on the left edge of the sea platform, and slow down (so you go fast, but slow enough to stop immediately when you tell the marble to) and jump over the mines. Now slow down completely and get the gem.
16) Roll forwards and to the right straight into the tornado that throws you out... and aligning you with the 20th gem!
17) Jump over the jelly fish and get the gem under the umbrella.
Two ways to do this:
18a) Grab the gravity modifier and quickly come to a halt on the beachball. Go with the arrow direction and get the last four gravity modifiers and slow down in order to get the gem but not fall off. Press backwards quickly and jump in order to finish below the gold time.
18b) Grab the gravity modifier and after the first time you hit the beachball, slowly roll (in mid-air!) on the first gravity modifier (where the arrow is pointing to) and then press backwards so your marble doesn't move. Hit the gravity modifier and start pressing forwards and roll to the second gravity modifier. Keep on holding forwards and hit the third and fourth gravity modifiers. Now roll and get the gem and press backwards quickly and then jump in order to finish below the gold time.
This pathway should do below the gold time. My best is 1:12, but I can do better, since it's the gem on top of the large wave that stops me.

Uggh, I give the hell up. That *(#@$! Vortexia always throws me off, as does that one really high gem in the middle of the jellyfish pool. Sometimes even the stairway throws me off.
