Hmm depends on what you plan to do and what card slot your mainboard supports.
XBox Live Arcade games theoretically don't need that much power :-)
But as mentioned, the 3D builder you plan to use makes a lot of difference.
For regular usage, a GeForce 6600GT or ATI Radeon X700 should do the job.

Which 3D builder? Depends on what the 3D builder needs to run.Hmm depends on what you plan to do and what card slot your mainboard supports.

Right now i plan to create a simple game in 2D using TORQUE 2D.
The Torque Game Engine will be the one ill use for 3D. but thats later on.
XBOX Live arcade games can be done with the TORQUE 2D builder ? if they are done in 3d they also wont need too much power either ?
My motherboard supports AGP 8x http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8MM-ILSR

Torque2D can only do 2D ... but most Arcade games i've seen so far (and that I found interesting ;) ) were 2D.

The first game i do will be in 2D. which AGP 8X video gard would you recamend for starting out with a 2D game ?

Service Pack 2 is a free download, if you have XP. Just run windows update

Depending on your budget either a AGP version of the GeForce 6600GT (should cost around 100$-150$. MSI GeForce NX6600GT-VTD128 was the cheapest I found) or the HIS Excalibur Radeon X850Pro if you plan to spend more money. But the later only makes sense if you play graphic heavy games or doing 3D rendering stuff or shader heavy stuff. For gaming and game dev the 6600GT is enough (it already supports Shader 3, so no problem even with advanced shader stuff in rendering or actual games)

Thanks for the advice. downloaded the sp2 pack and c ++ express. thanks again.
Marc,
Thanks for the info on the GeForce cards, how about ATI cards. I always thought the geForce cards overheated more then the ati brands. which ati ones could you recamend ?
what do you think of the Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB DDR TV-Out, DVI 8X AGP Video Card ???
mostly ill be doing 2D for the time being. I wont be playing games on the PC.
thanks again

My onlinestore only had Radeon 9250, which is no solution as it is as worse in speed as an integrated intel chipset or FX5200, just a better DX9 / OpenGL compatibility.

A 9600XT will be good as well if you can get one and don't need it for actual games (ie benefit of shader 3) :-) (and I would assume cheaper than a 6600GT as well)My onlinestore only had Radeon 9250, which is no solution as it is as worse in speed as an integrated intel chipset or FX5200, just a better DX9 / OpenGL compatibility.

thanks for the help. im just trying to get the cheapest card that will do the job. i dont plan on playing games on the pc. so its all good.
once i get a new card the t2d.exe file should work ?
how about the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR AGP 8X Multimedia Graphics Card its basically almost the same price as the other one.

But before you go and buy a new card, we should see if your actual card works.
can you perhaps mail me the build log to help "at" dreamora "dot" net?

The AIW will do the same job as it has the same chip. The lower level of VRAM won't make a difference but you will most likely have your fun with the AIW extras :-)But before you go and buy a new card, we should see if your actual card works.

It should be in the build directory of your solution.
The prebuilt exe seems to search for stuff that is not available on your system (perhaps because the S3 driver does not have it like the needed opengl driver parts or something).

I meant the buildlog.htm you got when you tryed to build it with Visual Studio 2005 express. (I'm not sure if something beside Visual studio can handle the build files, I'm using VS 2005 Pro myself)It should be in the build directory of your solution.

looks like you built T2D only not the whole solution.
The thing that makes me wonder is that windows.h was not found according the error messages ... That normally should not happen as long as VC++ 2005 was installed correctly. The file should be in C:\Programme\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\PlatformSDK\Include or wherever you installed VS 2005
But I found a problem. the T2D SDK.rc includes a mfc/afxres.h
Its just that this does not exist in VS2005 the only thing existing is atlmfc/include/afxres.h ...
replace that with instead of "mfc/afxres.h"

I checked the folder and no windows.h file.
do i also need to install
Microsoft DirectX 9 SDK or Torsion Torque Script Editor and Debugger

When VC was installing it asked me which of the 3 to install. i pick just the Graphical IDE. I checked the folder and no windows.h file.

I don't know the options of express but the windows.h should be installed together with Visual Studio ... If it is not then this is one of the express restrictions which seems to be mainly targeted at .NET 2.0 ...
I better hadn't choosen to install debugger as well as T2D seems to have a problem, because when I leave it, the debugger always pops up which freezes everything ... (unless you know where the process was in the not-in-front task manager)
