GDC 2006 - GG news

As GarageGames news are floatting around the web but dont make their way to GG community website I think it could be interesting to open a thread about it and trying to collect/share the goodness for everyone here.

I found two interesting articles for the moment.
An interview of Jay Moore
http://www.firingsquad.com/features/garage_games_interview/

An article with some Legions infos:

"Break Into Games" contest ?
GG to "release the Legions work to the community" ?
Miam :)

Did anyone find anything else?

First impressions on Legions from the tribal war forum
Quote:
1) The 'tech demo' is pretty early on, but after talking to one of the coder (Ben G) who explained he had bug fixed for about 5 days with little sleep to make it as best as possible, i was pretty impressed. That being said it was buggy, but mostly in the visuals.

2) I have no clue why they decided to include the weapon that they did. It was a wierd weapon that would pretty much be nixed after a prototype if this was a production game IMO. Ben told me that they had no plans presently to add any more weapons, which means no disc atm. Gun model looked really good, but kinda reminiscent of T:V models...

3) Speed was definitely there. You get going good. hitting shitty part from a high drop hurt you bad, but hitting it smooth gained you good momentum. After skiing around the map i was able to get a good feeling that i was going pretty damn fast.

4) Skiing was also good. Catching a corner allowed you to easily change the direction of your ski (much like T1), and the feeling was good. It wasn't as tight as T1, but it defintely didnt feel as bad as T:V imo. I wasn't amazed, but it was still pretty good. Also worth noting is that the game retained T1's jumpy skiing rather than perfect smooth 'no jump' skiing of T:V.

5) The game still lacked the perfect 'weight' of T1. It was too floaty, and reminded me a lot of T:V in the way jetting felt. To be completely honest, I was more than a little disapointed. Did it suck? not at all, but still i was definitely hoping GG would be able to eliminate any and all soupiness in the flying. Alas, it was a pipe dream to ever believe it.

6) Graphically I was very impressed with the engine. Despite glitches the game looks very good, with maybe a little too much Bloom (just a little). Earlier in the Torque engine development I was not so impressed, but they seem to have really kicked it up a notch visually. My hats off to them for that. Water effects were the real low-point, but hey, this is a tech demo so the polish would (if it gets made) obviously come.

My overall impression is that it has something worthwhile in it. After discussing the plans, my excitement is basically gone. if they release it to us, chances are it wont go very far. I really hope they change their minds, focus on getting the feeling there, and finish this shit.

I wish it was perfect, but at least it does some aspects quite well. For something at this stage to have that is at least a small victory.

I think he miss the point, Legions seems to be an early prototype so it'll definitely need some works on gameplay.
Overall it's seems to me that Legions will be pretty interesting for us developers and gamers!
