Help me export player.max

Hi,
I have built a game off the tutorial.base game, with the green alien character. I now want to re-export the dts file from the supplied player.max, as a pre-requisite to making some changes to the model. However I cannot get the model to export correctly. The following screen shots show the problems:

Any idea what could be causing this? My guess is that it is something to do with scaling, or something to do with the scaling combined with the .dsq files. When I launch 3ds max, it gives me the following message:
File Load: Units Mismatch
The Unit Scale of the file does not match the System Unit Scale.
File Unit Scale: 1 Unit = 1 Meter
System Unit Scale: 1 Unit = 1 Inch
Do you want to:
-Rescale the File Objects to the System Unit Scale?
-Adopt the File's Unit Scale?
For the above screen shots, I chose "Adopt the File's Unit Scale". Choosing "Rescale the File Objects to the System Unit Scale", results in two models appearing in Max, one 'bodymesh' the other 'multires:bodymesh'. The bodymesh is huge compared to the other one. Obviously max rescaled 'bodymesh' but not 'multires'. When exported, there appears to be no player model, and the game behaves erratically.
I have tried to use the 'box trick' on the model. But I couldn't get it to export then. Obviously the box trick does something unwanted to the model hierarchy. Will the box trick help here? And if so, how can I get it to work properly?
Any help on this matter would be really appreciated.
Thanks.
