Favorite FPS games and why

Just a little discussion fun, whats your favorite FPS game, and what made it your favorite. This is a thread that could kinda help others in their FPS design.
My favorite is Halo 2. I loved the storyline, it gives you a sense of what your playing for. I like the multi player ablities, I hardly ever play that way, but its fun when my little brother invites me over with him and his friends. It has a nice variety of weapons, but its not really that many, it just gives me enough to try different things. Graphics are sweet.

the winner: halo 1

I'd have to say halo. halo was awesome because the environments were amazing, the levels were easy, and the guns were good! in halo 2, though, fighting people who just pop out of nowhere when you least expect it just gets on my nerves. The guns were annoying because the SMG would be recioling upwards. I've personally fired an uzi and that upward effect is real, but you'd think that almighty master cheif who can flip over an overturned tank and jump 30 feet up in the air can at least keep the freaking thing at one level. I'd have to admit that the multiplayer levels were a lot better in halo 2.the winner: halo 1

Battlefield 2 : Special Forces
Clean, simple, fun. Can be played casually while accumulating ladder stats that are verified by EA and punkbuster.
You do not know how much i want that game.

edit for the reason: Tribes 1 Renegades is the game that is the most exilerating, fast and full of cooperative gameplay I ever seen and played. I played it for about three years and was in the OGL ladders for a bit more than a year. I retain only great memories of that time. The gameplay was so much more innovative and immersive than the "quakes" and "quakes wannabe".
Online-only gameplay in 1998 was a BOLD move! And it worked. I don't know how it worked financially for Dynamix at that time. But as a game, it worked marvelously.
A BIG thank you to all the souls who worked on that game and mod!
I just can't wait to see the Legions demo the great folks at GG are cooking for us...

There is absolutly NO contest over which is the best. It's Starsiege: Tribes with Renegades mod. That's it.. No maybe. No hesitation. edit for the reason: Tribes 1 Renegades is the game that is the most exilerating, fast and full of cooperative gameplay I ever seen and played. Half-Life had a great atmosphere that kept me thense and confused as I made my way though Black Mesa. I had a great time right up until a glitch made Gonarch invincible. (I stopped playing at that point.)
Farcry though just had this Arnold Schwarzennegar movie attitude pervading so much of it. I felt likke I could really be Ah-nuld in a movie like Commando. I loved every moment of that game.

Hours upon countless hours of fast-paced, multiplayer action. Even more so when that very same friend and I created our Chivalry mod for it. I've tried other FPS's over the years and none of them have ever giving me that same (or even remotely close) feeling as Tribes did.

Tribes 1 by far. I played Doom and immediately swore off of FPS games back in 95. Then my friend introduced me to Tribes and I was hooked. It was the only FPS (IMHO) that actually fully utilized a 3D environment with their jetpacks rather than locking the players to the ground.Hours upon countless hours of fast-paced, multiplayer action. Metroid prime. :) classic shooting and powerup action on top of a game of exploration. being able to scan and log denizens of the planet and it's innovative control setup sets it apart from all other fps.

Yeah, for me it would have to be Deus Ex, and then System Shock 1 and 2. The new half-life had a lot of fun physics based things. Deus ex had some added fun w/ stealth and physics as well. System shocks were just very very well done. 2 actually scared me and others I know! BUT, my overall fav has to be tribes 2. But not base, I usually played renegades or some of the non "extreme" mods. Base just didnt have enough roles or to play or enough weapons to keep me interested.

is a Great first person shooter.
probably the best
I've played them all.
and for the aspects available it is great.
Solid design.
Solid gameplay.
I could bash all the other games.
and with good reason..
for example:
BF2 is in debug mode..
the whole thing.
....
not just the exe .. but ALL parts.
no wonder...
halo was very repetitive.. and boring gameplay..
i finished it and was like.. wtf...
Doom3 and Halflife 2, single player? super boring.
i didnt even finish halflife 2 feel asleep and called her quits.
multi player is stagnant with death match being so prodominant.
Battle Field 2 would be second to aa tho
only because the Squad aspect is Great and really well implemented.
alot of the game is great but there are some things that are just Stupid..
.... modern warfare..
a crappy mig can strafe an aircraft carrier kill Everything on deck?
like .. wtf.. something seriously wrong with that picture.
lets see a whole squad of mig' attack even the Smallest american air craft carrier.
they get within a couple miles? and Wham vulcan cannons tear them apart..
even a high altitude bomber would have a hell of a time getting the jump on an aircraft carrier.

Other FPS games I'd suggest: Quake 3 Arena, Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Tom Clancy Series (Rainbow 6). I'm still waiting to hear anything new on the Realm Wars project as well, it was getting really good for a while there!
Stay tuned for our own up and coming FPS Horror 13 Cemetery Dr. in the not-too-distant future!

My choice is definitely Postal 2. The game might not appear too fancy but the interaction and immersion of going postal in a suburban town is a terrific way to blow off a ton of steam! Complete with enough realistic detail, jaded humor, gore, and even Gary Coleman, it sure does make the player feel good to burn the bodies as the body count rises. Running With Scissors did an awesome job and I suggest everyone to take the chance to let go with some aggression playing Postal 2 at least once.Other FPS games I'd suggest: Quake 3 Arena, Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Tom Clancy Series (Rainbow 6). Postal 2 has the best multiplayer gameplay of any game ever on any console IMHO.

fun sure.
but not too much polish, seemed lacking in many aspects.
(features game design content)
everything seemed juvenile.
not one person here has mentioned that they have played Americas Army.
which I find disturbing.
its a Free game. and it really does have the tightest first person shooting.
even quake 3 and 4 dont stack up

System shock 2 multiplayer, although it never took off, was the greatest example of co-op survival horror in any game to date in my opinion.

I hated Americas Army, it felt exactly like Counterstrike, and the gameplay was stale even for a free game. Postal 2 is full of subtle pollitical jokes/references, cultural comments and arguments. The Apocalypse weekend expansion (for the first part, anyway) insults big-name publishers and games much in the same way Scary Movie 4 parodies movies. It is hardly juvenile if you actually understand everything thats going on and pay alot of attention to detail.System shock 2 multiplayer, although it never took off, was the greatest example of co-op survival horror in any game to date in my opinion.

All Unreal games are good and always will be. They know how to write a game engine! If only us indies could get our hands on technology like that.
Postal was fun and humerous but provided no long lasting playabilty. Sure it was fun to piss on people, set them on fire, watch as they ran around in a frenzy setting other people on fire, torture cats, but the novelty wears off. Still worth playing though, even if just for a laugh.
The Tom Clancy / RavenShield games arn't too bad. Good at a lan when you want to play a different type of fps game. More serious with smaller margin for error, ie 1 or 2 shots & your dead, gotta think quick.
Come to think of it ALL those games are made in the Unreal Engine!!!
Edit, just remembered a classic old fps game that I loved. Rise of the Triads. That game was addictive. Nothing compared to todays standards but for it's time a bloody good game.

Americas Army Rocks. I disagree with a comment made above that the gameplay was stale. It's just a different style of gameplay, I've probably lost 3/4 of my life to that bridgecrossing map. All Unreal games are good and always will be. They know how to write a game engine! If only us indies could get our hands on technology like that.

I still have my old Apogee disc with the shareware version. It had the ability to have true rom-on-room and sprite geometry.

Call of duty. is my favorite. I like Halo better then 2 because my opinion halos weapons better. i know rockets dont have locks and some other minor changes. BF2 nice. i like getting promoted and getting better weapons. Call of duty 2 nice graphics but nothing to blow up.
