Episodic Game Serie

Hello all,

I am currently looking to start a small development team to work on an episodic video game series. The idea of the game is based on the way comic books work where the story is continued every month and the series continues until the creators are done with the series or there is less interest in the work. I want to create a game that we release a part of the story every month or so for a low price and we continue the story every month for the players. The game itself will be very story driven, with plot twists, character development, etc.. and I would like the player to be able to control different characters at different times to develop the story, similar to Indigo Prophecy. I will be playing the part of writer, some design, and some music, so anyone else with artistic and programming talents interested in creating this game please contact me. I am currenly planning on it being a darker horror setting, but not really anything like survival horror games its a very different type of game with much less combat.

Thanks
Alex

You might want to look into the Eldorado Gate games. They were a RPG series for the Japanese Dreamcast and were a nice little arc. It was cut short, which annoyed those few who played it, though. You should also look at MMORPG content models for business. While you're not proposing a MMO-styled game, the subscription base and the business model may be helpful in determining how to hook and maintain interest aside from hoping that your story does all the work.

I'd be interested in seeing how you get on with this game.
I've been a fan of the Episodic Game Model for some time, since I played (and purchased all episodes) Siege of Avalon.

Unfortunatly, Siege of Avalon is no longer with us. Which is a shame 'cos I really enjoyed it. They did everything right with the model apart from the patching system. It was complicated to patch. It just needed an auto-patcher.

It had a vibrant loyal community.
The devs had a good relationship with their customers.
The purchasing and download model was good (for the time we're talking 2001)
The activation key system worked well.
The game had a good in depth story which unfolded as the player progressed.

If you can keep a loyal fan base, have a flawless delivery system and have that MUST continue feel to the game, you'll be onto a winner.

I always wanted to check out the Eldorado games but I didn't know whether or not they would be import friendly language-wise. I don't know any Japanese so playing an RPG in a language I can't read would probably take the fun out of it.

I agree with the idea that if the game is simple to patch and can create a big fanbase then the game could be very successful and that is definitely a part of the development that a lot of time will be spent on.

A big difference between Siega of Avalon and Eldorado and the game I have in mind is that they are a much more traditional RPG gameplay (from what I know) and I would relate my idea to having gameplay more similar to Shenmue and Deus Ex where there are stat building RPG elements but the gameplay is very different.

They are not import-friendly at all. Luckily, there are FAQs for them at GameFAQs. But playing them without any knowledge of Japanese would be painful to say the least. My Japanese is pretty awful but I can wend my way through most RPG's and story-oriented games (the language in Kuon was rather difficult).

Eldorado was much more traditional as a RPG and concentrated on character narratives converging in an episodic structure. A game like Shenmue/II would be an interesting project.
