If you're going to use this approach I reccomend using 2-3 textues and only use it on fairly flat surfaces.
That screen looks really awkward, mainly due to the wierd angles but also do the the fact that it's just *there* an no where else. A real road placed on squishy dirt would be diffused a bit into the surroundings. Maybe have all spaces 1 "unit" away be painted with a grass mixed with black asphalt-like substance?

Hehe, very painted on the terrain. If you're going to use this approach I reccomend using 2-3 textues and only use it on fairly flat surfaces.

well i found out this morning i can paint diferent textures on the terrain so i did and experiment and and pasted a 50x256 road on the existing sand.jpg texture and thats how it ended up, i will be looking to make it better :)

So you followed the terrain squares? That's the reason for the right angles and no curves I assume? Wasn't someone looking at decals to do this also?

i havent tried any angles or curves yet but it should be posible to minpulate a texture to get the effect you want.
it may be a good idea to lay down the road first, then build the terrain around it

well its kinda strange , if you used the largest brush you would get somthing like this # for the pattern, but you can use the original terrain texture to hind anything you dont want showing.i havent tried any angles or curves yet but it should be posible to minpulate a texture to get the effect you want.

But unless you're following the same grid orientation as the terrain you'll get an aliasing effect on the edges--right? Or am I misunderstanding what your doing?

im not sure i understand want you mean, in the link be low i have started with the scorched terrain ,then laid down the road (with the largest brush), then went to the smaller brussh and laid the grass terrain which does blend onto the road texture, but where the curser is now i simply readded the road texture again,,,and you can see it cleans up quite wellroad3.jpg

Right, so you created a road texture oriented 0 degrees and a companion texture oriented 90 degrees to get the turns in your second image above. Too bad we're currently limited to 6 textures--this could get real good! It would also be great to be able to realign the orientation of the terrain textures; instead of following the normal XY orientation, why not, say, 45 degrees, etc. As it is, if you placed a texture rotated 45 degrees, you would get an aliased edge effect.

Is your road a texture painted on the terrain, or is a brush-based object placed on the terrain?
