Problem with Milkshape + UVMapping

Right guys.. I have no idea how to start explaining my problem so I'll quickly run through what I did to see if anyone spots anything.
1. Made my basic model in Milkshape
2. Exported to .obj and loaded up with Ultimate Unwrap 3d
3. Unwrapped the model, arranged each section to fit, scaling where needed etc
4. Saved as "map.bmp"
5. Opened the map with Photoshop... Numbered each section and scribbled a little
7. Saved as "map.JPG"
6. Opened up Milkshape, selected all, added the new texture "map.JPG"... Clicked assign.
Ok, problem is this... When I click assign, my model goes black. I went into the texture coordinate editor... Selected one group and all I see is a SMALL dot in the top left.. If I move the dot over my texture, it does change colour.. But, thats useless.
How do I get from having a dot in texture coordinate editor to having the flat UVmap?
I'm guessing the problem is some where along the line the actual UVMap coordinates are being lost?
Any help welcome, even if its in the form of a tutorial I missed. Saying that, I've tried half a dozen tutorials now and none have worked.
Clearly the problem is with me.. Just need someone to point out what part.

are you sure you export with the right options from Ultimate Unwrap ?? (i don't use Ultimate Unwrap so i'm don't know about this for sure).
it looks like Milkshape is not reading UVW information correctly from your model. (have you try to export to different format from Ultimate Unwrap, e.g OBJ, X, etc.. and open it again from Milkshape ??)
and also make sure you know which channel your UVW is,
i always have trouble with UV channel when exporting (sometimes i do my UV unwrapping in channel 2, which won't exported correctly from 3dsmax).
sorry can't give much help :P
