Quake 3 engine reference?

I recently downloaded the quake 3 engine source. needless to say it's huge. has anyone here happened upon a good reference or document for the engine? I've googled and yahooed it for the last couple of nights with no luck.

The forums are active. There are many people who have taken the source and performed clean up have now ported the code to SDL and to other playforms.
