Decreasing poly count

Hello,

We're in the need for some static wrecked car models for our city level and I have found these on Turbo Squid's site.

My question is, since these models are 8,000 polys each, would it be possible to decrease the polys to an acceptable level for Torque? Is this something that's doable by a modeler?

Also, is it generally a good or bad idea to purchase character packs with animations that are not created specifically for Torque. Is this something that a modeler will be able to convert to Torque's DTS format or is it better to model and animate from scratch? Thanks.

It's totally possible for a modeler to optimize those for you. Many artists usually shape the mesh to the form they want and optimize as they go, but it's just as possible to clean it up afterwords. Of course this can lead to UV distortion, so some experimenting would need to be done. Also keep in mind that the models have a dust and dirt shader applied to them, which will not coorilate into game engines so easily so you'll need to have someone actually create a texture for it ( a simple grundge overlay would probably do the trick).

As far as the animation part I'll let someone a little more comfortable witht he subject hopefully answer you. While I've exported a bit of animations to TGE, I don't know if there are specific bones needed and recognized by the engine. Of course either way it'll still need to be converted to DTS through the modeling application and properly set up (which you can find quite a few nice tutorials on here on how to do this), as well as the DSQ files for custom animations.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your input Justin. I'm glad it's possible because those models are just perfect for our game.

If you or anyone else is interested in taking a stab at optimizing them for Torque (with pay), feel free to email me. I'll probably post a job ad here anyway.

Also, if anyone can give me some insight on my animation question I'd appreciate it.

Nick,

classic and bones animations are not a problem : your animator will easly export that stuff to .dts or .dsq.

There is a program called Action3D that can reduce the poly count on models.

Anders, tried the demo and it's exactly what we need! Thanks!
