Thousander Club

by Chris Labombard · in General Discussion · 02/06/2006 (11:56 am) · 48 replies

This thread is for people to post their progress in attempting to become a member of the Thousander Club :)

I hope the rest of you will post your current running hour total here too.

I've been working on The Funk, and a new game which is yet to be announced. I have a full time job and a full time girlfriend.

My current running total for 2006 is 160 hours, as of right now ... Feb 6, 2006 3pm EST

If you don't know what the thousander Club is... check out Scott's .plan

Ah.
I'm between 130-160 for this year, but it's only the beginning.

Is that since I've had the engine, of this year?

If it's since ever, I've years of Art design in games (well, mods, anyway.)

This year, i'd say ~100hrs.

This is pretty neat, i'm also participating in the thousander club which you can catch on my webpage at http://www.gamesafoot.com however, one thing to note: If you're over 1000 hours that's great but you don't really have a problem. The idea I get is those of us who can't really seem to get alot done, so we challenge ourselves to see if we can put in 1000 hours. I'm not going to be so lame as to say you guys with 1000+ already shouldn't participate but I think you should at least look at some other aspect of your work that could use 1000-something and challenge yourself to that. Such as Gianfranco Berardi's 1000 game ideas - http://gbgames.com/blog/?p=314 - Or Scott's own 1000 models / 1000 downloads.

I could totally be way off base and i'm not saying anything bad about you guys that do 1000+ hours a year. I mean that's great and that is what i'm aspiring to, but I don't seem to have the discipline to do it normally. So i'm challenging myself to it.

So far i've only got 9 hours in. Anyways kudos particularly to those 150-160 hour guys (as you're way ahead of me but not yet up to the 1000 hour mark)

Keith - Putting in that much time is difficult for me. I'm participating in this for a few reasons. First and foremost is my production. By participating in this Im encouraged to put in that extra hour here and there. I have tons of other responsibilities, so don't think that this is easy for me :)

Also, I thought it would help the people having troubles getting motvated by getting others into gear with my progress. I also put my MSN email up so people participating can talk with me. I can be very motivational :)

I didn't mean to take anything away from this for anyone. Look me up on MSN sometime and maybe I can help you pick up your pace if that' the kind of thing you're looking for :)

Cool. A friendly discussion over what this all means. I think it is fantastic that everyone is finding their own ways to define the goals. I didn't think it would catch on as much as it has, frankly. I chose 1000 because it was a tidy number and matched well with the admittedly simplified formula of 100=experienced 1000=expert and 10,000=master. Also, I chose it because I knew it would be a stretch for me -- little did I know it would be such a huge stretch. It has already been a great learning experience and I imagine it will take me in directions I did not expect. I'm glad to have the company -- it will keep me honest. This week has been good so far.

So, who else is in?

If we get a solid set of people who stick with it the whole year I say we do a team goal next year.

Lol, if you can work on your project for 10,000hrs per year, then i think "master" is a bit of an understatement.

I know there are 525,600 minutes in a year, but are there even 10,000 hours? I think the 10k is cumulative, over time. lol.

There are only 8736 hours in a year (roughly)

Chris - I didn't intend to tear anyone or the thread down. I'm just noticing that those that have already had 1000 hours probably can do it with no problems. And as I understood the "club" it was to challenge ourselves to do more than we normally do. Wait a second you have 160 hours heh, so what I was saying didn't even apply to you ;-)

However this applies to you "Anyways kudos particularly to those 150-160 hour guys (as you're way ahead of me but not yet up to the 1000 hour mark)" and may I add the guy up there with about 100.

By the way i'm up to 11. You can chart the progress via Scott's blog, or my individual progress via my blog at http://www.gamesafoot.com

Keith - Noone has had 1000 hours for this year yet. If you're referring to 1000 last year, or in general, then yes, I'm in that category. I probably hit 2000 last year.

The update for this week is that now, as a group the official people are well over 300 hours total. And that's only the people who have reported their hours more than once or have given me permission to put their hours in my blog. It's a lot more if I count everyone from this thread. We could power a city with this energy -- almost, but not quite, as much energy as when I give cookies to my kids in the afternoon.
