Rig player to existing .dsq animations?

Greetings everybody,
I haven't been around here for quite a while, so please bear with me. :) I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I did a search here on the forums, the documentation and through Google.
Is it possible to rig a player character in Blender 2.40 to the already existing .dsq's? If yes, could you please provide me with a link to a documentation on a proper armature setup.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Matt :)

Thank you very much for your quick reply! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me a very detailed answer, this helps me alot. I do not think that I will bother with trying to use the existing .dsq's then, since I'm not a scriptor. :)
