Well, we have forums for this now. James, will, and Bao Trung, try to post your longer topics there, to save space and keep it managable.
When you sign up, use a name the same or close to your GG name, so we all know who you are.
I need ideas and a 3D Modeler for this. And I need a better name.
Civil War: Tactical Simulator is an RTS where the main focus is on tactics and maneuvers.
3 Game Types:
Quick Battle: Chose a battlefield and side, and fight out the battle.
Historical Campaign: Follow a Union or Confederate army through all their major battles.
Campaign: Choose a side and take command of the entire country. Use a risk-like map to move armies, then go into an RTS to fight each battle.
Units:
Infantry: The basic infantry, armed with muskets or rifles.
Cavalry: Horse-mounted men armed with rifles and sabres.
Artillery: Cannons that can shoot solid shots at fortifications or enemy artillery, or canister shots at enemy infantry.
Buildings:
Field Hospital: Tent to heal units
Command Tent: Gives some advantage that I haven't thought of yet
Railroads: Speed up reinforcement numbers and speed
Entrenchments/fortifications: Troops behind these have extra defense
Extra troops arrive at a set time period, building railroads speeds this up.
I'm looking for a 3D modeler to make all the 3D models.

I don't understand your reaction to smaller groups of soldier models representing a larger mass. How it would look turn base, I'm not sure... unless you made it turn based. Blocky? Again, perhaps I'm missing something but these would look like troops, just not thousands. Again, the balance between realism and game play.
I haven't played either of those games but I'll have look to see what you mean.
Cheers!
Edit: Had a look at those games - they illustrate what I've been suggesting. There are a large number of units there but not the thousands they would in reality represent. Again, I maybe missing something but I think we're all on the same page here :)

I'll have a look at those links tonight Will. I had friends who fired off Muskets with round shot and the stories they would tell! :)I don't understand your reaction to smaller groups of soldier models representing a larger mass. i like sudden strike beacause i like world war2 games and like it way of playing, no resource gathering just playing and getting reinforcements.
i like stronghold (1) because you can move your men into towers and wall and specificaly place them onto it, unlike age of empires.
(the trenches could be like the walls in stronghold, where you can specificaly place the people on to them onto certain places, also mortars).

Look the reason i dislike it is beacuse in turn based games you have one man which represents 'X' number of people, normally this one man would be on one square. I just dislike it, i just do.i like sudden strike beacause i like world war2 games and like it way of playing, no resource gathering just playing and getting reinforcements.

Like James said, this summer we are going to start really working on it. I'm too busy now to make any significant progress, but i've been working on it in my spare time.
The brainstorming is great!
I'm planning on letting the player pause anytime, and be able to issue orders while paused.
If anyone has played Nemisis of the Roman Empire, the grouping will be similar. You can group so many men to a captain. Then you can group captains to brigadier generals. Then you can group brigadier generals to lieutenant generals, and so on. Then, you could double click(maybe) on a soldier to select his company. Maybe triple click to select his brigade?
Lieutenant generals could each have there own buttons on the in-game GUI for quick selection. This would select all of his men.
I could set up a seperate forum for this. Would people sign up and post there? Or is this better?
After the tutorial, you would probably be a captain, and only control one company. After winning battles, you could be promoted to brigadier general, and command a brigade. You could keep getting promoted until you command all the Union/Confederate forces.

I'd also start perhaps thinking about creating a slightly larger team... seems you might have a few recuits if not some beta testers here ;)
Cheers!

Creating a forum where we can sign up would be a great idea. This is going to get ungainly pretty quick.I'd also start perhaps thinking about creating a slightly larger team... seems you might have a few recuits if not some beta testers here ;)

In the Napoleon's time, French soldiers still use musket, and the chance of hitting one (and i mean one) man in a distance of about 150m is 1 hit to 30 shots. While as you know British soldiers in the Waterloo battle used rifle against Napoleon's troops with the chance increased to 1 to 2 (significant, huh?). Therefore some British soldiers can become "snipers". Truly when a muket has been rifled, its accuracy is nearly that of today's pistol (not other rifle of course). So the tactics of firing mass of musketballs or bullets was only used mainly in the beginning of the war, when the full bullet with gunpowder attached to it (like the modern ones) hadnt been invented. At that time, due to slow reload speed, soldiers had to fire in volleys to produce enough firepower. But afterward, when you can fire 8 or 10 shot in a minute there's no need to do so. So i think battles in Napoleon's time is quite different to Civil War, especiall in the later half of the war.
As you say, guns those days were aimed at large mass, so accuracy (at least in horizontal direction) is not too important. That may works in the beginning of the war when trenches are not used commonly. Later both sides developed trenches that will make such thing you mentioned much less common. When two armies engaged in a trenches battle, it would last about 2 or 3 months !!.
I really like Stronghold too. It's cool to actually "man" your towers with archers, rather than watching a tower with arrows coming out of nowhere. That's why i have said about "specific commands", i had been trying to mention such things you mentioned. I think in this game we should have the troops "deploy" on a trenches, automatically hide in it when bombarded by enemy, etc. Thanks for clearing it out.
One small thing is that i suggest you should use the edit button (next to the rubbish bin button) when you want to add something to your post, not repeat it like that. And you should delete repeated posts, too.
@Niko:
Oh man so you has gone on holiday for all that time? I just started to wonder whether you have sprouted wings and flied somewhere else ^_^.
Your idea of grouping men is just simply great. It's is similar to Takeda, where you click a soldier and you select the whole division. And there should be more commands available for a company, and even more commands available for a brigade to carry out.
@James:
I will enjoy a seperate forum for this game and i will be one of the first ones to sign in. It's cool having a forum with a handful of friends. But i think that forum will work better when the game has already gone into progress. Anyway dont get bothered by my opinion, go on and creat a forum, im looking forward to signing in.
By the way, if you want to have some new recruits for tester and idea-feedback provider i would be very happy to apply. Anyway i dont know anything other than that ^_^.
Good luck.

would i just submit feedback all the time via the forum?
what about the demo.
and you know ages back i talked about a US civil war FPS well here it is
http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=1114
if you could hide in trenches, as they would crumble, would you have 1 type of trench (ie mud) or alot of types (tech-tree).
IE. mud-wood-metal.
Mortars. what about these intresting machines ( i have changed this to just one 'Mortars and sorry for the spamming.
what about Sieges?

We should talk about forum areas, access, etc when you have a moment.
Will, what are you in real-life, a professional researcher? - Love that site, great resource!
Now find me some sites that illustrate uniforms and unit types ;)
