Commands to applications.

I'm working on an application, and i'm curious what methods there are to send a command to an application, and what the best methods are. Any Ideas?

It really depends on what you want sending commands to the app, a person, a local process on the same computer, someone half a world away... etc

Its a application on your pc, for example, telling Visual Studio to change the viewport.
