Shaper Feedback Request
by Alexander Luddy · in Artist Corner · 01/07/2006 (4:04 am) · 9 replies
I recently released the latest iteration of the shareware 3D modelling tool I have been working on in my spare time. As always I am extremely keen for user feedback.

The tool can be downloaded from here.

All feedback is valuable to me however the most valuable is from existing MilkShape 3D users looking to switch to something better. If you find that Shaper is not worth while switching to please let me know why.
Thanks

I plan to support .X for version 1.0. .ms3d is not on the road map at this stage however if I receive more requests I shall add it.
Can you tell me which 3ds files in particular are causing problems? I am assuming they are from content packs.

If you're looking to encourage existing MilkShape 3D users to switch to your program, it would make sense to include an option to import files in its native format. Also, many beginners who have read the books by Ken Finney will be using MilkShape, and some of the models that come on the CD are in .ms3d format.

@Alexander: I have tried several .3ds files from various websites. Is there different rev's of .3ds format? The free ones (jeep file) on Psionic worked fine. I tried free downloads from other sites and had some errors, some worked. A friend of mine had bought the Buggy pack from Psionic's "The shop". He had a copy of shaper, so he tried importing it in and he said he got an error and it shut the program down. He also download the jeep file on Psionic's free downloads that I had... no errors. He said he was going to try some files in the Dark Matter content pack to see if he gets errors with any of them. I'll let you know what he gets.

The problem is that some 3DS files take advantage of features that others do not. The problem will most likely be that Shaper has problems with particular 3DS features.
If I could get access to a, preferably free, 3DS file that is problematic I can identify and fix the problem.
Thanks for your help.

truck causes a error and shut program down.
clown imports in. But if you reset or try import a new file ... you get an error and shuts program down.
I am going to switch over to your forum so it will be easier for you to track bugs. My friend and I will be using your program for awhile (hopefully for a long time) to help you out. Hope you are going to be ready for lots of input. LOL. Just to let you know that we are going to be testing out several content packs as well with Shaper. Hopefully this will help you with what file formats that you might find important to add to your program.

Does anyone know if there is a new URL for Shaper? The old domain and/or hosting seems to have expired.

It is extremely annoying when your domain registrar does not have your correct e-mail and your domain expires and you are informed about when it is too late :(
