Documentation/Resource Question

by Anthony McCrary · in General Discussion · 03/02/2002 (7:27 am) · 10 replies

Would it be possible for GG to allow team members on a project access some of the torque documentation?

For example, have the download pages disabled, but still allow them to access the Resources/SDK Forums/Docs pages still?

This wouldn't seem to violate any licensing.

I mainly ask so that artists and scripters who don't need to license the engine can still get the info they need.

I'm wondering the same thing too. I'm a programmer on my team, and I need to give access to the docs to my team members, espescially some of the step by step tutorials.

I'm not really seeing what you are asking for.
SDK forums are probably not going to get open to the public, why? Because it contains code, hello?

Resources are as far as I know accessable to the general public. Documents same.

I'm not trying to sound harsch here, but alot of people REALLY put alot of effort into the documentation. You'll have to remember that many of the documents refer to code or functions in TGE that you cannot get onto if you don't have the license.

How would you seperate normal members from licensed ones, and from those who are part of a team hierchy with licensed members in it?

I probably missed your whole point there, sorry if that's it.

Private SDK documentation is covered under the license agreement. If you want access to it you have to buy a license. Why? For the same reason code isn't allowed outside the private forums. It is private SDK information and making it public weakens the SDK and lowers sales. GarageGames has to do what it can to maintain control over the licensed material.

If your team members need this information, they will need a license. Paying $100 for unlimited access to all of the documentation, downloads, and private forum areas does not seem unreasonalble to me. In fact, it seems like a good deal.

It seems, they are trying to tell you "Pay up or Shut up".

Tony Lamba, please refer from posting that childish egocentric crap around here. That belongs elsewhere, here we help eachother out. The people sailing this ship has to eat too, not just you.

Anthony,

Unfortunately we can't open up the site any more than it already is. The stuff non-SDK owners can't see is hidden for a reason; internal engine information is revealed, and it obviously doesn't work to have non-licensees viewing that information.

We do understand the need to communicate in the team, though. That is why much of the documentation is available to non-owners. Your artists and scripters can view the art and scripting documentation and public forums as it is now. For example, the 3D Studio Max Documentation is available to the public (you may need to be registered on the site to view it, but that is totally free). Your artists and scripters just can't get access to the engine-specific, C++ code documentation and forums.

I can't see why they'd need that anyway. :) If you do need to give more people access to these technical areas, it will be necessary to purchase the appropriate number of licenses. Viewing the engine's internal code is precisely what defines the need for a license, and the items you wish to see reveal the engine's internal code.

I owe you guys an apology. I had been looking through the documentation while logged in, and I kept thinking "man, how am I going to share this with the team?". Yesterday, I logged out and realised that _everything_ an artist would need is available without logging in.

Sorry to waste your time with a "me too"!
